Top-Seeded Lady Cougars Roll in 9-2 Win Over USCB in PBC Quarterfinals

CSU will host the remainder of the tournament, advancing to Friday's semis

COLUMBUS  – The No. 2-ranked and top-seeded Columbus State Women's Soccer team welcomed USC Beaufort (S.C.) to the Walden Soccer Complex on Saturday night for the Peach Belt Conference Tournament Quarterfinal.
 
The Lady Cougars (17-0-1) captured a controlling 9-2 victory over the Sand Sharks (7-6-4) to advance to next weekend's semifinal. With the win, CSU will host both semifinal matches and the championship match as the highest remaining seed.
 
First Half
 
Abigail Akerson registered the first shot of the match in just 16 seconds and would go on to score the first goal of the match in the 9th minute with the assist from Anna LaBarbera. Columbus State's prominent attack produced three missed shots over the course of the next 20 minutes.
 
Mia Robinson slotted home the second score of the match in the 30th minute and was swiftly followed up with a barrage of shots on goal from Elle Henschel and Brooke Yount. Robinson picked up a second goal in the 38th minute with the assist coming from Kendal Coreil, giving CSU a 3-0 lead heading to the halftime break.
 
Second Half
 
Columbus was not satisfied with the first half and added a fourth score within the first 90 seconds as Faith Knoedler found he back of the net with the help of Emma Beddow. With a 4-0 lead, CSU produced solo goals from Beddow in the 55th minute and Akerson in the 58th minute to boost the lead to six goals.
 
Michelle Medina was given a great opportunity from the penalty spot in the 65th minute after being fouled in the box. Medina converted on the chance to advance the lead to a seven-goal lead. The Lady Cougars continued to threaten and remained in an attacking mindset, scoring an eighth goal off the boot of Ui Suzuki in the 67th minute.
 
One final goal for CSU would go on to fall in the 72nd minute with a brilliant finish from outside the box from Yount, giving the Lady Cougars a 9-0 advantage. With many changes in the lineup, the CSU defense slipped up and gave up a pair of goals to Sophia Willis and the Sand Sharks in the 79th minute and 81st minute. Coach Entlich quickly placed the experienced defenders back into the match to secure the backline for the final few minutes.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • CSU led 24-7 in total shots and 15-4 in shots on goal.
  • The Lady Cougars also dominated 17-1 in corners.
  • Akerson led the attack with four shots with three on goal for two goals.
  • Robinson came off the bench and tallied two goals in 33 minutes of play.
  • Medina moves to second on the team in goals with nine while a total of four others are now at eight goals on the year.
  • CSU has six players with 17 or more points this season and 11 in double figures.
  • The nine goals scored is third-best this season in total scores for the Lady Cougars.
  • Columbus State moves to 4-0 against USC Beaufort with the series' largest margin of victory.

  • Columbus State will host fourth-seeded Georgia College on Friday, Nov. 15 with the official match times set to be released on Monday by the conference office.
