COLUMBUS - The Columbus State University baseball team defeated the University of Montevallo 8-7 Wednesday afternoon at Ragsdale Field at Burger King Stadium. With the win, CSU improves to 11-9.
Derek Wylie put the Cougars on board in the first inning with a three-run home run. The Falcons then hit two solo bombs in the second to take a 2-1 lead.
In the third, Montevallo scored three runs off of three singles, and added another run in the fourth to make it a 6-3 ball game. However, CSU took the lead in the fifth thanks to a fielding error after a bunt from
Cody Ferguson.
Jackson Chizek and
Ian King both scored on the play. Wylie tied the game with a RBI groundout to third base, scoring Ferguson.
Win Johns put the Cougars ahead thanks to a RBI single to right field, plating
Colby Brabston.
Ferguson hit a RBI single to right field in the eighth to give the Cougars some cushion room. The Falcons attempted to make a comeback in the ninth, but only scored one run on a bases-loaded double-play by CSU.Â
Ferguson led the Cougars with three hits and Wylie recorded four RBIs.
Leo Giannoni received his third win on the mound tonight after pitching 2.1 innings.
Peyton Burton collected the save, his third of the season.
