Baseball Falls to Georgia Southwestern in First Game of Series

The Cougars lost 6-13 Friday evening.

AMERICUS, Ga. - The Columbus State University baseball team lost 6-13 to Peach Belt Conference rival Georgia Southwestern State University on Friday evening in Americus, Ga. 

Georgia Southwestern out-hit Columbus State 14-9 and the Cougars recorded five errors. 

The Hurricanes took a 5-0 lead over the Cougars by the second inning, but Andrew Rubin put the Cougars on board with a two-run home run in the top of the third. GSW quickly made it 9-2 in the fifth and sixth innings.

In the seventh, Jackson Chizek hit a three-run home run to minimize the Hurricanes' lead, making the score 9-5, however the Canes scored four more runs in the bottom of the inning off of a two-run RBI double and a two-run RBI single. CSU attempted a comeback in the ninth inning, as Trevor Gruszka collected a RBI, scoring Kole McGlumphy.

Win Johns led the Cougars with three hits and starting pitcher Colton Joyner received the loss on the mound.

Columbus State and Georgia Southwestern will play game two of the series on Saturday, April 13 at 6 p.m.
