DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - At the conclusion of the Peach Belt Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships the Columbus State University Track and Field teams finished in fourth place.
The Lady Cougars scored 92 points thanks to the efforts of 14 student-athletes. Freshman Kayli Miller took home the bronze in the discus throw with a throw of 34.37m (112'9"); Miller also placed seventh in the shot put with a throw of 10.08m (33'1"). Freshman Dana McDaniel placed fourth in the shot put with a throw of 11.02m (36'2"); McDaniel also placed seventh in the discus with a throw of 32.39m (106'3").
In the triple jump, Sophomore Deandra Downer placed second with a jump of 11.19m (36'8.50"), earning herself a silver medal.
On the track
In the 100m, Nakhia Montgomery took silver in 12.09s; Montgomery also finished third in the 200m, crossing the line in 25.09s.
In the 400m hurdles, Freshman Liza Varnum finished in third place, crossing the line at 1:07.12, breaking her school record. Varnum also competed in the 100m hurdles, where she placed fifth with a time of 16.08s. Teammate Syni Lacy finished eighth in the 100m hurdles, crossing the line in 17.27s.
Senior Royal Delay finished her Senior year with a sixth-place finish in the 800m run, crossing the line at 2:21.39.
In the relays, the Lady Cougars finished in third place in the 4x100m, getting the baton around the track in 50.32s. The 4x100m team members were Montgomery, Lacy, Downer and Varnum.
The Lady Cougars finished the second day of the Championship by placing sixth in the 4x400m relay, finishing the race in 4:18.25. The team members were Amber Elder, Jenna Rolen, Alesia Johnson, and Delay.
The Lady Cougars ended the Peach Belt Championship in fourth place with 92 points.
On the men's side
Junior Tereil Mitchum once again took home the gold in the shot put with a throw of 14.92m (48'11.50"). This is Mitchum's second year in a row winning shot put at the Conference Championships. Tyler Southern placed third in the shot put with a throw of 14.44m (47'4.50"), and Freshman Raylene Magby finished in sixth place with a throw of 13.56m (44'6").
In the discus throw, Justin Love placed seventh with a throw of 39.76m (130'05"), and Tyler Southern placed eighth with a throw of 38.92m (127'08").
Freshman Joey Turner took sixth place in the triple jump with a jump of 13.42m (44'0.50").
On the track
Junior Dante Walls has won his third consecutive championship in the 400m hurdles. He took home his third gold today with a time of 53.41s. Walls was accompanied on the podium by teammate Mark Ravenscraft, who took silver with a time of 54.14s.
In the 100m, Devin Brimidge placed seventh, sprinting through the finish line in 10.90s. Brimidge also placed seventh in the 200m with a time of 22.51s.
Savian Taylor placed fifth in the 800m, crossing the finish line at 1:53.05.
Freshman Rashad Amey placed fifth in the 200m, crossing the line in 22.47s.
In the relays, the 4x100m relay team placed fourth and clocked a time of 42.11s. The team members were Jahmai Dillon, Amey, Walls, and Brimidge. The 4x400m relay team also placed fourth, getting the baton across the line in 3:18.05. The team members were Walls, Kade Harmon, Ravenscraft, and Taylor.
The Cougars ended the Peach Belt Championship in fourth place with 114 points.
