COLUMBUS - The Columbus State University baseball team defeated the University of South Carolina Beaufort 13-4 Friday night in the opening game of the Peach Belt Conference series. With the win, CSU improves to 23-14 (10-6 PBC).
After USC Beaufort took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, the Cougars scored six runs in the next half of the inning to take a 6-1 lead.
Derek Wylie ripped a two-run home run,
Seth Nelson launched a three-run homer and in his second at-bat of the inning,
Cody Ferguson hit a RBI single through the left side to plate
Cole Eison.
The Cougars added on three more runs in the second inning thanks to a
Win Johns RBI double to left center, a Nelson sac fly and a fielding error that allowed
Kole McGlumphy to score from second base.Â
The Sand Sharks added one run in the third and sixth innings before CSU tallied on three more in the bottom of the sixth. Johns scored on a wild pitch,
Luke Hasty came home on a throwing error and Ferguson walked with bases loaded.Â
USCB kept the game going in the seventh, scoring another run thanks to a sac fly, however CSU tacked on one more run in their next at-bat with a McGlumphy RBI single up the middle.
Nelson went 2-for-4 with 4 RBI while McGlumphy and Eison each recorded three hits.
Colton Joyner earned the win on the mound after pitching 6.1 innings.
