No. 23 Lady Cougars Utilize Strong First Half to Defeat Florida Southern

CSU opens with undefeated weekend at the Walden Soccer Complex

COLUMBUS – The No. 23-ranked Columbus State Women's Soccer team continued to roll on Saturday with a solid 4-0 showing against Florida Southern at the Walden Soccer Complex.

The Lady Cougars (2-0-0) suffocated the Mocs (1-1-0) early by putting away three goals in the first 20 minutes of play. Columbus State was gifted an own goal late in the second half to help propel them to a 4-0 victory and close the opening weekend undefeated.

First Half

After some brief possession play back and forth, Columbus State struck first three minutes in. The Lady Cougars found the back of the net thanks to the finishing effort of Abigail Akerson off a corner kick by Sarah Hungerford.

Ten minutes would pass before a foul in the box led to a penalty opportunity for Vanessa Aviles. She slotted home the goal for her second on the weekend, giving Columbus State a two-goal lead in the 13th minute.

The Lady Cougars continued to hold pressure on the attack, producing three shots before finding the net again seven minutes later. Aviles hit the woodwork and was followed by another miss on the crossbar by Akerson before she finished off the pin-balling action for the third goal of the match.

Florida Southern had an opportunity in the 24th minute with a shot from Jasmin Adames being knocked away by Heidi Harris for her first save of the match. CSU held FSC to four total shots in the first half while leading with nine attempts on the attack and three shots on goal.

Second Half

Columbus State came out of the halftime break with some continued pressure up top, notching three shots in the first five minutes of play with two landing on goal. Moments later Florida Southern traded a couple efforts on the attack but were unsuccessful at finding one on target.

Late in the half, the Mocs pressured Harris with a shot on goal but the junior keeper did a great job keeping the score sheet blank for the visitors. Another effort in the 82nd minute was thwarted by Harris to keep the clean sheet alive.

In the 85th minute a ball whipped in by Anna LaBarbera landed in a crowded box and was eventually found in the back of the net as an FSC defender knocked it in for an own goal, giving CSU a 4-0 advantage. The Mocs had a much stronger second half on the attack, out-shooting CSU 6-5 with two landing between the posts.
