MARS HILL, N.C. – The Columbus State Men's Basketball team kicked off the 2025–2026 season in winning fashion on Friday afternoon, grinding out an 84–79 victory over Southern Wesleyan in Mars Hill, N.C. In a game that stayed tight from start to finish, the Cougars leaned on efficient shooting, strong guard play, and timely defensive stops to secure the road win.
Columbus State's offense looked sharp in its opener, with multiple players stepping up in big moments.
Jydon Hall led the way, putting together a standout performance with 23 points on 10-of-15 shooting, plus 5 rebounds, 7 assists, and 3 steals in 37 minutes. His playmaking set the tone for the Cougars throughout the afternoon.
Juwan Mitchell was equally impressive, dropping 18 points and going 8-of-12 from the floor while grabbing 5 rebounds and adding 3 steals. Inside,
Marlon Smith controlled the glass with 11 rebounds to go with 14 points, giving the Cougars a key double-double threat in the paint.
Lee Langstaff II added another 14 points, attacking the rim and going 8-of-9 at the free-throw line, while
Ahmed Soumahoro chipped in 11 points, knocking down both of his three-point attempts and providing an offensive spark.
Columbus State kept its composure late, answering each Southern Wesleyan push by knocking down enough shots at the line to close things out. The win gives the Cougars early momentum as they settle into opening-weekend play.
