MORROW, Ga. – No. 14-ranked Columbus State men's basketball continued their stretch of road games this week with a meeting at in-state conference rival Clayton State on Wednesday night.
The Cougars (20-3, 11-2 PBC) took down the Lakers (7-16, 1-12 PBC) in a 73-60 victory in Morrow, Ga. to further extend their winning streak and increase the lead at the top of the Peach Belt Conference Standings.
First Half
After an opening layup from
Wisdom Uboh and a pull up jumper from
Roman Son, CSU led 5-2 within the first 60 seconds of play. Clayton State responded with an 8-4 run over the course of the next three and half minutes to lead 10-9.
Uboh drained a pull up bucket at the 14:25 mark to reclaim the lead and sparked a 12-5 Cougar run to lead 21-15 with less than 10 to play. Uboh and
Joshua Guilford led the scoring stretch with five points apiece as CSU went 5-of-6 from the field and a perfect 2-of-2 from three.
The Lakers swiftly took back control of the lead with a 7-0 run and followed by edging out the Cougars in a 13-12 stretch of play to close out the half with a 35-33 advantage. Uboh tallied five more points in the final stretch with
Jordan Mitchell behind with four.
Both teams finished the first half shooting for 48.1% (13-of-27) from the field and 50% (4-of-8) from three. Clayton State held the edge in free throws, outscoring the Cougars 5-3 in made free throws.
Second Half
It took nearly two minutes for the first bucket of the half to drop with Uboh scoring off another pull up jumper to ignite a 13-4 run to open the half. Eight points from Uboh and five from
Jarrett Adderton gave CSU the 46-39 lead with 14 minutes to play.
The Cougars went on another solid run of play, outscoring the Lakers 14-7 over the next four and half minutes. Columbus State led 59-46 as Mitchell and Adderton led with four points as CSU shot 5-of-7 from the floor.
Both teams finished the final stretch of the second half on an even 14-14 run in which
Harp Hunter and Uboh tallied three points each for the Cougars. Columbus State finished the game with a 73-60 advantage, shooting 4-of-12 from the field and 5-of-6 from the foul line in the final few minutes of play.
