COLUMBUS – Columbus State University baseball defeated Albany State 5-2 during their single-game matchup on Wednesday afternoon. With this win, The Cougars are 7-5 while the Golden Rams are 9-5.
Columbus State took an early 2-0 after producing three hits by Andrew Rubin, Cole Eison, and Cayden Evans. Evans brought in Rubin with a right-field single and a stolen third base from Eison caused the Albany State catcher to make a throwing error, bringing in Eison.
CSU continued to control the game as they produced two more runs in the second inning. After recording a single, Landen Jensen was eventually brought home with a right-field single by Luke Miller. A sacrifice fly from Rubin allowed Jackson Chizek to come home for an unearned run.
Jensen opened the fourth with his first home run of the season to give the Cougars a 5-0 lead. Albany State got on the board from an unearned run after a single to left field brought in a Golden Rams player. ASU added another run to the board in the seventh to make the score 5-2. The Cougars brought Peyton Burton onto the mound to relief during the ninth inning to give CSU the 5-2 win.
Five different Cougars stepped on the mound tonight to retrieve the win. Trenton Burnett picked up the win as he tossed for five innings with two strikeouts, two walks, two hits, one run, and one error. Nick Davidson, Tucker Starling, Bailey Thorne, and Peyton Burton saw one inning apiece. Thorne recorded strikeouts while Starling recorded one strikeout.
