Baseball Walks It Off In 12 Innings Against North Georgia

Cougars win game one 8-7

COLUMBUS – Columbus State baseball opened conference play with a 12-inning game over North Georgia. The Cougars defeated the Nighthawks 8-7 for game one of the three-game series.

Columbus State struggled early in the first inning after going down 0-2 to the Nighthawks. A fielding error by Jackson Chizek allowed North Georgia to get their first run on the board while another Nighthawk reached first base. With bases loaded for UNG, a walk by Trace Goforth allowed the Nighthawks to go up 2-0.

The Cougars got on the board in the third inning after Cody Ferguson ripped a single to bring in Maddox Mueller for an unearned run. After a scoreless fourth and fifth inning, North Georgia got two more runs on the board in the sixth. A huge left-field double from UNG allowed two Nighthawks to come home for a 4-1 lead.

The Cougars responded in the bottom sixth as they brought two runs onto the scoreboard to lessen the deficit to just one run. With bases loaded with Cougars, Chizek hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Warrick Wilmot. Two pitching changes for North Georgia were not enough to stop the Cougars as the bases became loaded again. Another sacrifice fly, this time from Cole Eison, allowed Ian King to make his way home for a 3-4 score.

The Nighthawks continued to struggle on the mound as they made another pitching change after a walk and hit by pitch, which landed two Cougars on base. Andrew Rubin ripped the ball to left field bringing in Cayden Evans for the tying run. Chizek brought in Wilmot for the leading run after he ripped a single to left field.

North Georgia tied the game 5-5 in the eighth inning after a throwing error by Chizek brought in a Nighthawk. Bailey Thorne left two Nighthawks on base in the ninth after he struck out two batters to keep the score tied.

After a scoreless tenth inning, North Georgia blasted a home run to center field to take a 6-5 lead in extra innings. The Cougars responded as Eison Ripped a double to the center field wall and soon after a single by Evans brought in Eison to tie the game back up to 6-6.

North Georgia opened the twelfth inning with a single to get a runner on base who eventually came in for the 7-6 lead off a sacrifice fly.

Columbus State responds in the bottom twelfth with a walk-off to win game one. A single from Andrew Rubin and Luke Miller landed two Cougars on base. With bases loaded, Ferguson singled past first base to bring in Miller and Rubin for the walk-off win.
