YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Columbus State University baseball traveled to Young Harris, Ga. for a neutral site contest against Lenoir-Rhyne (N.C.) on Friday afternoon.
The Cougars (2-2) struggled in the weekend opener, dropping to the Bears (4-1) in a 15-6 loss.
LRU opened with a lead-off homer in the bottom of the first for an early 1-0 lead. The home team on the scoreboard and two more in the second inning with a two-RBI double for a three-run advantage. CSU remained in a hitting drought until the top of the fourth inning, leaving one runner stranded after a two-out double from
Bryce Knox.
The Bears added one run to the tally in the bottom of the fourth with two hits and an error to score the fourth run of the game. Lenoir-Rhyne produced an RBI triple, and a sacrifice fly to add two more in the fifth for a 6-0 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, the game went out of hand for the Cougars with six and seven runs scored for the Bears to jump into a 13-0 lead. The Cougars go one run back in the seventh with an RBI triple down the right-field line from
Ian King. LRU quickly added another in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI double.
A walk, two errors and a fielder's choice helped put two runs on the board for CSU in the eighth to cut the deficit to 14-3. LRU added one more to the tally in the bottom of the eight before the Cougars went out swinging with a three-run homer from
Cole Eison to make the game 15-6 before the final out was recorded.
Inside the Numbers
- Eison led with two runs scored and three RBIs while King led with two hits.
- CSU gave up three errors while LRU gave up 2
- The Bears led 18-6 in total hits which included four doubles and a pair of triples.
- Trace Goforth (1-) received the loss after tossing for 4.0 innings, giving up three earned runs on eight hits and four strikeouts.
- Three other Cougars made brief appearances on the bump.
