COLUMBUS – Columbus State baseball fell 8-11 in game one of the series against Lander on Friday afternoon.

An early 8-0 lead for Lander sunk the Cougars into a deep hole in the second innings. A hit-by pitch followed by two singles loaded the bases for the Bearcats. A walk brought in the first run as the bases stayed loaded. A double brought in three runs followed by two more singles for the additional three runs to end the tough inning for the Cougars.
Cody Ferguson got on base in the fourth after ripping a double to right field, but he was left stranded at third base.
In the sixth inning, Ferguson recorded another double to help bring in Cole Eison for the Cougars first run. Cayden Evans followed with a single down the right side to bring in Ferguson. Lander recorded three hits to bring in another run for a 9-2 lead.
After a Maddox Mueller single, Eison eventually brought him in after he recorded a single for himself. After two wild pitches in the seventh brought a Bearcat to third base, a ground out to shortstop allowed him to make it home. A sacrifice fly to center field brought in another runner for Lander.
In the ninth inning, Jackson Chizek ripped a single and eventually came home after Luke Meszar ripped a single of his own. A single from Ian King brought in Meszar for a 6-11 score. After a single from Michael Cruz followed by an error, King was able to advance to third base and then come home after a wild pitch. With bases loaded, a ground out from Warrick Wilmot brought in Cruz for the Cougars' final run.
Inside the Numbers
- CSU recorded fourteen hits while Lander recorded sixteen.
- Ferguson, Chizek, Meszar, Wilmot, and Evans recorded two hits apiece while Eison, King, Cruz, and Mueller recorded a hit piece.
- CSU added four runs in the ninth inning with four hits and two errors from Lander.
- Four Cougars took the mound and they totaled just three strikeouts on the day.
