Track & Field Makes Positive Strides at Montevallo Falcon Classic

COLUMBUS - Columbus State University men's and women's track & field took to the road on the weekend at the Falcon Classic Multi hosted by Montevallo.

The two-day event was shifted to a combined one-day event due to the inclement weather that rolled through late this weekend. The men's program finished in sixth with 53 team points while the women tied for eighth with 17 team points.

For the men, the Cougars produced 12 top 10 placements across several events. Jayden Powell led the shorter-distance events with a seventh-place finish in the 400-meter (50.21s) and a ninth-place finish in the 200-meter (22.29s).

Zameron Boozer and Jarvis Evans both competed in the high jump, placing in third and seventh, respectfully. Boozer recorded a mark of 1.93m followed by 1.85m from Evans. Four Cougars finished in the top 10 of the pole vault with William Player recording yet another 5.00m jump which remains above the NCAA qualifying threshold. Camerin Rigdon was just three-tenths of a meter off from qualifying to finish third with a mark of 4.55m.

For the throws, Tereil Mitchum tossed in the shot put and marked a throw of 14.07m for second. Joshua Dare went for second in the discus with a mark of 47.99m. The pair also competed in the hammer throw with Mitchum grabbing sixth (45.03m) and Dare snagging seventh (43.51m).

As for the women, Nakhia Montgomery led with solid performances in the 100-meter and 200-meter events. Montgomery raced to third in the 100 with a time of 12.14s and followed with a time of 25.39s in the 200 for sixth. Alesia Johnson recorded a 400-meter time of 1:00.62 for sixth to round out the Lady Cougars in the top 10 of shorter-distanced races.

Liza Varnum placed eighth while Kaitlyn Alston placed 10th in the 100-meter hurdle with times of 16.53s and 16.63s, respectfully.

In the jumps, Deandra Downer cleared a mark of 10.90m in the long jump for fifth place while Alston cleared 10.17m for ninth. As for the throws, Kayli Miller highlighted with a ninth-place finish in the discus with a throw of 35.14m.
