COLUMBUS – Columbus State baseball lost 5-10 in game three of the Peach Belt Conference opening weekend series.
The Cougars are now 8-7 (1-2 PBC) while the Nighthawks are 11-6 (2-1 PBC).
After a quick three outs for North Georgia, Luke Miller opened the first at bat for the Cougars with a home run out to left field.
The Nighthawks responded in the second with an opening single and two walks from Ryan Suppa to load the bases. Suppa brought in two runs for North Georgia after he hit two batters back-to-back at the plate. A single up the middle brought in a two-run RBI for the Nighthawks. Two more singles for the Nighthawks allowed them to go up 7-1 in the second innings.
North Georgia continued to produce runs and went up 9-1 in the third inning as Columbus State struggled to respond. The Cougars had an opportunity to get runs on the board during the fifth inning with Warrick Wilmot on third base, but a ground out ended the inning and left CSU with two on base.
The sixth inning brought another run in for the Nighthawks to take the lead to 10-1.
The Cougars collected two runs in the seventh inning after Wilmot opened with a single to center field. Bryce Knox followed with a single of his own. After a fielder's choice put Ian King on first base, the Cougars had bases loaded. Tyson Kirkland stepped up to pinch hit for Jackson Chizek and a right field single allowed Wilmot to score. A sacrifice fly from Miller brought in King for a 3-10 score.
In the ninth inning, Ethan Crawley ripped a home run to left field for a two-run RBI. Despite the late inning runs it was not enough for the comeback in game three.
