COLUMBUS – Columbus State baseball fell 7-9 in a single-game matchup against The University of Montevallo on Tuesday afternoon.
Montevallo got on the board early against Columbus State with a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Two more runs were added for Montevallo in the second inning. An error by Cody Ferguson and two wild pitches from Trenton Burnett brought in a runner, followed by a sacrifice fly to bring in the other.
CSU was unable to produce anything offensively which contributed to multiple short outings and three Cougars left on base within the first three innings. The Falcons went up 7-0 in the fourth inning after bases loaded with zero outs led to a sacrifice fly.
In the sixth inning, Cayden Evans doubled to right field and then moved to third on a wild pitch. An RBI from Bryce Knox brought in Evans for the Cougar's first run of the game. Evans ripped a triple to open the eighth inning and was eventually brought in due to an error by the Falcon's centerfielder. A single from Luke Miller brought in Warrick Wilmot and Ethan Crawley for a 4-7 score.
Montevallo responded after a Falcon landed on base from a hit by pitch and was eventually brought in off two singles. The Cougars continued to struggle on the mound as bases were loaded and a wild pitch advanced a runner home.
Evans ripped another double followed by a single from Crawley to land two Cougars on base. Wilmot brought in Evans and Crawley after he doubled to right field. A single from Michael Cruz brought in Wilmot. Despite the Cougar's last-inning efforts, they fell 7-9 to the Falcons.
Inside the Numbers
- CSU produced sixteen hits compared to UM's eleven. Six of the Cougars hit's were produced in the final two innings.
- Eight different Cougars recorded hits as Evans led with four hits.
- Miller and Wilmot had two RBIs apiece while Knox and Cruz had one apiece.
- The Cougars struggled on the mound as six different players saw action. Connor Folds took his second loss for the season.
- Sawyer Wilson tossed for two innings and led with four strikeouts as the Cougars only tallied eight total strikeouts.
