HARDEEVILLE, S.C. – Despite slipping into a five-run deficit early in the game, Columbus State University baseball found new life by producing 10 unanswered runs in a late-game resurgence that stunned USC Beaufort (S.C.) on Friday night.
The Cougars (14-15, 5-8 PBC) held the Sand Sharks (4-25, 1-12 PBC) scoreless from the fifth inning and beyond, securing the series opener on the road at the Richard Gray Sports Complex in Hardeeville, S.C.
Columbus State 13, USC Beaufort 8
Columbus State struck first with a bases-loaded walk from Warrick Wilmot for the early lead. The Cougars followed with base hits from Mikey Cruz and Ethan Crawley to open the second frame, scoring runs on a sacrifice fly from Cayden Evans with an RBI single from Cole Eison to move the lead to three runs.
In the bottom of the second, the Sand Sharks would claim the lead with four hits which included a two-RBI double, a two-RBI single, and an RBI base hit for the 5-3 advantage. USC Beaufort would go on to take an 8-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth with three runs on three hits, leaving the bases loaded in the process.
The Cougars did not break in the challenge, clawing their way back into the game with a five-hit, three run fifth inning. Bryce Knox opened with a lead-off single followed by a base hit from Wilmot and a three-run longball from Cruz, his first of the season. CSU pulled the deficit down to just two runs with four innings to play in regulation.
After a scoreless frame in the sixth, the Cougars sparked a late-game surge beginning with three runs in the seventh inning. Eison drove in three runs on a double down the right-field line to eclipse the hosts with a 9-8 lead. Cruz would add another RBI to his tally in the eighth inning, pushing Wilmot home with an RBI single to further advance the CSU lead to 10-8. Columbus State managed to add three more runs on the board in the ninth inning to provide some insurance, scoring on a three-run homer from Wilmot for the 13-8 advantage.
