Baseball Holds On For 6-5 Series-Opening Win Versus Georgia Southwestern

CSU takes the series opener on Friday night

COLUMBUS – The first game of the final regular-season series at Ragsdale Field took place on Friday night as Columbus State University baseball hosted Georgia Southwestern.

The Cougars (21-17, 11-8 PBC) held on to defeat the pesky Hurricanes (25-16, 12-7 PBC) who fought hard until the final frame in a 6-5 win in front of home crowd at Burger King Stadium.

Columbus State 6, Georgia Southwestern 5

Georgia Southwestern knocked down a lead-off single and gathered a walk before advancing on a wild pitch. The Hurricanes were on the board first with a sacrifice fly out driving in one run for an early first-inning lead.

Columbus State quickly swiped the Canes' control of the score with an RBI single from Cody Ferguson to drive in Ian King followed by Warrick Wilmot's RBI groundout which scored Cayden Evans for a two-run advantage. After another sacrifice fly from GSW which leveled the game, the Cougars would claim the lead yet again in the third frame.

Cole Eison led the third inning off with single through the left side and was pushed in on a homer to right field from Wilmot for the 4-2 edge. Michael Cruz and Jackson Chizek both added singles but were left stranded to close out the inning.

GSW notched a solo homer in the fourth to cut the deficit to one run, however, CSU managed to respond in the bottom half of the fifth inning with an RBI single from Cruz to lead 5-3. Wilmot remained a threat at the dish, knocking in another run with an RBI single in the sixth for a 6-3 lead.

After quick innings in the seventh and eighth frames, Georgia Southwestern battled back into the game after a pitching change to open the ninth. GSW opened with two singles and a walk to load the bases before cutting the deficit in half with an RBI single and a run driven in on a double play. Fortunately, CSU left a runner stranded to close the game, winning 6-5.
