COLUMBUS – Columbus State University baseball took to Ragsdale Field on Saturday afternoon for the second of a three-game series in Columbus, hosting Georgia Southwestern.
The Cougars (21-18, 11-9 PBC) took an early one-run lead in the second frame, yet slipped to the Hurricanes (26-16, 13-7 PBC) in a 5-4 loss despite a three-run eighth inning surge.
Columbus State 4, Georgia Southwestern 5
Columbus State notched a two-out single from Cayden Evans in the opening frame but were held scoreless to close the inning. Eric Moore and company took care of the Hurricanes in the first two innings leaving the guests with nothing but a walk in the second frame.
The Cougars would eventually create some offense in the bottom of the second inning with a one-out double from Warrick Wilmot getting things started. Michael Cruz knocked down an RBI single and advanced to second on an error, giving CSU a one-run lead.
Georgia Southwestern returned to the dish in the third and garnered three hits while also taking advantage of an error to plate three runs. The Hurricanes drove in two from an RBI single off Paul Hegeman's bat and capped off the inning with an RBI single from Brant Deerman for a 3-1 lead.
Unfortunately for the Cougars, the offensive efforts were thwarted for a few innings by James Fordham who started on the bump and produced eight strikeouts in the following four innings of play. CSU had a chance in the third inning to plate a run, leaving a pair of runners on after a single from Luke Miller and a walk from Cole Eison. Both teams produced scoreless innings from the fourth through the seventh innings, as CSU struggled at home plate with just a hit in the fourth and sixth innings.
Action began to heat back up in the eighth inning as GSW plated two runs on three hits on Sawyer Wilson who came in during the seventh inning to relieve Moore. The Hurricanes took a 5-1 advantage with back-to-back two-out RBI singles.
For the Cougars, CSU opened the eighth inning with three-straight walks to force a pitching change from the guests which brought on Carsen Plumadore. Columbus State chipped away at the four-run deficit beginning with sacrifice fly from Cody Ferguson which sparked a three-run inning. Wilmot followed with an RBI single before another walk placed Bryce Knox on first. With the bases loaded, CSU would bring in run with a walk from Jackson Chizek to cut the deficit to one.
Peyton Burton came in to finish the ninth inning for the Cougars and gave up three hits to the Hurricanes, fortunately some good defensive efforts from the Cougars kept the comeback hopes alive. In the bottom half of the inning Evans gave CSU new life with a one-out single to center followed by a base hit from Eison to place two runners on. Unfortunately, a foul-out and a fly-out would be the ending results as GSW held onto the 5-4 lead to split the series at 1-1.
