COLUMBUS – Early run support in the first four innings proved to be crucial for Columbus State University as Georgia Southwestern lingered late in the game in Sunday's Senior Day series finale.
The Cougars (22-18, 12-9 PBC) held on to their lead over the Hurricanes (26-17, 13-8 PBC), downing GSW with a 10-7 victory.
Sunday's seniors that were honored prior to the first pitch were Peyton Burton, Cody Ferguson, Joey Gill, Trace Goforth, Ian King, Tyson Kirkland, Eric Moore, Andrew Rubin, Avery Stephens, and Ryan Suppa.

Fireworks kicked off the bottom of the first frame with a solo homer from Cayden Evans to lift CSU to an early advantage. Ryan Suppa and company took care of business in the top of the second, forcing GSW to leave two stranded after a pair of base hits.
The Cougars would move to a 4-0 lead in the third after leaving a pair of their own stranded in the second. CSU put a pair on with back-to-back walks to open the third inning and scored one on a single from Cole Eison followed by an RBI groundout from Cody Ferguson. Bryce Knocked singled to score Eison for the four-run advantage with the Cougars closing the inning with three hits.
In the bottom of the fourth, Columbus State was inching closer to a double-figure lead with Luke Miller sparking a three-hit, three-run inning with a lead-off double. Evans pushed in Miller on a sacrifice fly before a two-RBI double from Warrick Wilmot would boost the Cougars' lead to seven.
Georgia Southwestern began to fight back in the fifth, scoring two on a double from Brant Deerman which cut the deficit to five runs. CSU answered with base hits from Miller and Ian King to set up a sacrifice fly from Evans for the 8-2 lead. The Cougars managed to tack on two more runs in the sixth for a 10-2 lead, scoring on an RBI base hit from Wilmot and a sacrifice fly from Jackson Chizek.
The Hurricanes lingered around to keep the game alive with CSU knocking at a potential run-rule shortened game. GSW picked up a run from a homer off Paul Hegeman's bat followed by an RBI single from Noah Roberts to make the game 10-4 in favor of the hosts.
The guests on the scoreboard fought back to split the deficit in half with a three-run homer from Hegeman. Thankfully, the Cougars managed to hold on to the three-run lead through the eighth and into the ninth to secure the Senior Day victory.

- Evans blasted his sixth homer of the season to erase a nine-game skid without an extra bases hit, he remains atop of the CSU statistical leaders with a .351 average on the season.

- Evans also produced two sacrifice flyouts while Chizek notched a sacrifice bunt and fly as well.
- Suppa went for 6.1 innings on the mound with the start to move to 3-3 on the season, giving up four earned runs on 12 hits, one walk, and three strikeouts.
- Tucker Starling and Bailey Thorne both notched 1.1 innings of relief each.
