DAHLONEGA, Ga. – No. 25-ranked Columbus State men's tennis traveled north on Monday for a big Peach Belt Conference clash at No. 21-ranked North Georgia.
The Cougars (9-9, 2-1 PBC) downed the Nighthawks (9-6, 2-3 PBC) with a 4-3 victory, clinched by Samer Al Tori in singles play.
CSU captured #3 and #1 doubles to take the first point of the match, despite the 6-3 loss against Benedek Szombathelyi and Yike Liu at #2 doubles. Camilo Cano and Al Tori captured a 6-4 win at the third line to level doubles play before Andrea Sandrone and Elias Peter picked up a clutch 7-5 win in the first line to take the team point.
Sandrone boosted the Cougars to a 2-0 advantage with wins of 7-5, 6-2 at #3 singles with Liu moving the cushion to 3-0 with 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) tiebreaker win at #6 singles. UNG chipped away at the deficit with three-set victories over Cano at #1 singles as well as Peter at #5 singles to make the match 3-2 CSU.
Fortunately for the Cougars, Al Tori captured #2 singles 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) to clinch the match victory. UNG took the final match at #4 singles against Szombathelyi to make the final match score 4-3.
