Baseball Sweeps Augusta On Saturday Afternoon

Eighth inning home run from Ferguson seals game three win

COLUMBUS – Columbus State baseball swept Augusta as they closed out the series with a Saturday afternoon doubleheader. 

The Cougars took game one 4-1 and game two 9-8 to sweep the Jags. Columbus State moved to a 20-15(10-8 PBC) record as Augusta moved to 9-30(5-13) record. 

Game One- Columbus State 4, Augusta 1

The Cougars got on the board early after two walks and an error by the Jags loaded the bases in the first inning. A sacrifice fly from Cody Ferguson brought in Luke Miller for a 1-0 lead. The Jags tied the game 1-1 in the fourth inning after a wild pitch brought in an unearned run. 

In the bottom of the fourth, Bryce Knox reached base after being hit by a pitch then he stole second base. With two outs on the board, Miller singled to right field to bring in Knox to regain the lead. 

Michael Cruz closed out the game for the Cougars with a home run in the eighth inning to bring in two runs. Augusta was unable to respond in the ninth inning, giving CSU the 4-1 win. 

Inside the Numbers

  • Columbus State led with six hits while Augusta had four hits. 
  • Cruz led with two hits and two RBIs while Evans, Miller, Ferguson, and Knox recorded one hit apiece. 
  • The Jags led with nine strikeouts while the Cougars recorded seven strikeouts.
  • Eric Moore(2-2) received the win after tossing for eight innings with seven strikeouts, four hits, three runs, and three walks. 
  • Peyton Burton got the save after he tossed for the final inning. 

Game Two- Columbus State 9, Augusta 8 

Augusta opened the game with a two-run home run but did not hold the lead for long after a response from Columbus State in the bottom of the first. Ferguson opened with a double down the left field line followed by a home run from Cole Eison to tie the game 2-2. 

Miller opened the second inning with a single followed by a home run from Sebastian Collender. Jackson Chizek recorded his first hit for the afternoon after he doubled to right field and was eventually brought home off a ground out at second base. 

Augusta responded in the third inning with an opening home run from Nolan Turner. CSU went up 7-3 in the third after a single from Collender brought in a runner followed by a single from Chizek to bring in two runners. Augusta recorded their third home run of the afternoon in the fifth inning after Parker Ingram brought in two runs. 

In the top of the sixth, the Jags brought the score to a one-run deficit after two singles landed runners on base. A wild pitch from Ryan Suppa brought in a Jag for a 6-7 score. Evans brought in a run in the bottom of the sixth after a bunt landed him on base and a sacrifice fly from Knox brought him home. 

Augusta's Parker Ingram tied the game 8-8 in the top of the seventh inning after he hit his second home run of the game to bring in two runs. Ferguson responded in the bottom eighth with a solo home run to seal the 9-8 win for the Cougars. 

Inside the Numbers

  • Both teams totaled seven home runs in the final game. 
  • CSU led with thirteen hits while Augusta had ten hits. 
  • Ferguson led with three hits while Eison, Warrick Wilmot, Colander, and Chizek recorded two hits apiece. 
  • The Cougars left seven runners stranded while the Jags left six runners stranded. 
  • Suppa tossed for six innings with eight hits, six runs, and four strikeouts. Tucker Starling(3-1) received the win after tossing for a single inning with two strikeouts and a walk. Burton received another save for the afternoon after he closed on the mound for the final inning.

  • Columbus State will travel to Pensacola, Fla. to face West Florida on Tuesday, April 8th at 6 p.m. ET.
