Cougars Score Late in 7-4 Loss to Argonauts

Columbus State University baseball lost the first of two games in Pensacola, Fla. in a Wednesday evening meeting against West Florida

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Columbus State University baseball loss the first of two games in Pensacola, Fla. in a Wednesday evening meeting against West Florida.

The Cougars (20-16) dropped the game to the Argonauts (22-15) in a 7-4 defeat, despite a game inning surge.

West Florida opened with four hits and two runs in the bottom of the first inning for an early 2-0 lead. The Argonauts added two more runs in the third with a two-run homer for a 4-0 lead. CSU's bats struggled early producing just five hits in the first five innings.

The Cougars managed to get on the scoreboard after Ian King drew a walk, and Cole Eison hit a two-run homer to right center field in the top of the sixth. In the bottom half of the inning Mathew McMahan held the Argonauts scoreless, and West Florida led to 7-2.

Columbus State responded with back-to-back doubles in the seventh inning from Bryce Knox and Michael Cruz, and a sacrifice fly from Cayden Evans to make the score 7-4.

Cruz led the way for the Cougars in hitting with two doubles, a walk, with a run batted in and a run scored.

Unfortunately, West Florida managed to shut the Cougars out in the eighth and ninth inning to secure the three-run lead for the win.
