ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – 23-ranked Columbus State men's tennis traveled south to the Sunshine State on Sunday for a Peach Belt Conference bout at second-ranked Flagler (Fla.) at the Pollard Tennis Center in St. Augustine.
The Cougars (8-9, 1-1 PBC) secured the doubles point against the Saints (14-2, 4-0 PBC) but struggled in singles play, falling to a 5-2 defeat on the road.
Columbus State took care of the first and third positions in doubles play, after seeing the second position fall to the hosts. Camilo Cano and Samer Al Tori fell 6-1 in the second line and were followed by a win from Andrea Sandrone and Elias Peter at the first position.
The fourth-ranked duo of Sandrone and Peter bounced back from last week's loss with a 6-3 win on Sunday afternoon, moving their doubles record to 20-3 on the season. Benedek Szombathelyi and Yike Liu secured the doubles point with a 6-3 victory in third position to give CSU the 1-0 lead.
Szombathelyi was the first to finish in singles play, falling 6-2 and 6-3 in the fifth position which gave the Saints the equalizer at 1-1. Peter fell in the fourth line of singles, dropping two sets of 6-4. Flagler moved to a 3-1 advantage after two 6-4 wins over Andrea Sandrone in third position.
Al Tori battled in the second position of singles, moving to 11-9 in singles play after taking wins of 6-4 and 7-5 to cut the CSU deficit to 3-2. Unfortunately, in the first line of play, Cano drop his match with losses of 6-4 and 7-6 (7-2). Wrapping up singles play was the sixth line as Liu fell despite taking set two 6-0, he gave up set one 6-1 and set three 6-3.
