VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Columbus State University cross country teams opened their 2025 season with strong performances at the Valdosta State Border Clash on Friday evening.
The Cougar men turned in a podium finish, placing third overall in a highly competitive field. Seniors
Blake Lewis (26:03) and
Owen Hartshorn (26:39) led the charge, pacing the team with fifth and eighth place finishes. A balanced effort across the roster kept CSU in contention throughout the race and set the tone for what could be a promising campaign.
On the women's side, the Lady Cougars showed grit and determination with a seventh-place finish. Freshman
Anna Norton (23:09) highlighted the effort with a steady run, while a group of talented newcomers gained valuable experience in their collegiate debuts.
Head Coach Xavier Matthews praised the collective effort of both squads. "For the men, finishing third shows the work they've put in this preseason. On the women's side, we're continuing to grow with a young team, and this was a good first step," Matthews said.
Columbus State will now turn its focus to the next meet on September 12, 2025, in Dahlonega, GA at the UNG Invitational.
