MILLEDGEVILLE, GA. – The Columbus State baseball team scored at least one run in all but one inning of Saturday's 11-3 Peach Belt Conference victory over host Georgia College & State University at John Kurtz Field.
With the win, the Cougars are now 13-8 overall with an 8-3 mark in League play, while the Bobcats fall to 9-15 with a 6-8 Peach Belt record.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- An RBI single in the first inning from senior Cayden Evans sparked an offensive outburst for the Cougars as Columbus State led 3-0 through two and half innings of play following additional RBIs from seniors Jackson Chizek and Landen Jensen.
- Georgia College scored its first run of the game in the third inning before CSU answered with an RBI from sophomore Jacob Smith in the top of the fourth.
- After the Bobcats scratched across another run in the bottom of the fourth, Columbus State used a four-run fifth inning to extend its lead to 8-2.
- Chizek, Evans, and fellow senior Michael Cruz each had an RBI in the fifth inning, while Jax Yoxtheimer sent an RBI single to left center in the sixth to give CSU a 9-2 advantage.
- GCSU's final run came in the sixth inning of action as an RBI single in the seventh and another RBI from Evans in the eighth inning, his third of the contest, put the visiting team ahead by a final score of 11-3.
- Senior right-hander Christian Harmon and freshman right-hander Logan Shrewsbury each pitched a perfect inning of relief, combining for three strikeouts and facing the minimum number of batters in their seventh and sixth appearances of the year, respectively.
NOTES
- Columbus State starter Connor Folds (3-3) picked up his third victory in his last four starts, allowing three runs (two earned) on 10 hits with four strikeouts over seven innings on the mound.
- The Cougars have used just four pitchers over the first two games of the series against Georgia College.
- Yoxtheimer finished the game 3-for-4 with a double, two runs, two walks, and an RBI, while junior Victor Junco had a multi-hit performance of his own, turning in a 2-for-4 day at the plate.
- Chizek filled up the box score with two runs, two RBI, and two walks of his own, and Evans totaled a team-high three RBI with two walks as well.
- Cruz (3) and Jensen (2) also had multiple walks in the contest as Columbus State's patience at the plate led to a total of 15 free passes.
