AIKEN, S.C. – Columbus State fell by a 10-3 score on Saturday afternoon to host USC Aiken in Peach Belt Conference baseball action from Roberto Hernandez Stadium.
The Cougars fall to 10-8 overall with a 5-3 record in conference play, while USC Aiken improves to 16-5 with a 6-2 mark in League play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Pacers gained an early 1-0 lead in the home half of the second inning before Columbus State answered with a solo home run from senior Landen Jensen in the third to even the score at 1-all.
- USC Aiken retook the lead with a run in the third, adding one run in both the fourth and fifth innings of play to build a 4-1 advantage.
- An RBI triple from junior Jax Yoxtheimer in the sixth inning cut the CSU deficit to just two runs, but the Pacers quickly answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the sixth to lead 5-2 with three innings to play.
- A five-run seventh inning, highlighted by back-to-back solo home runs, put USC Aiken ahead by a 10-2 score.
- Senior Cayden Evans hit a two-out solo home run to right in the top of the eighth to give CSU a bit of life but the Pacers held on for victory on their home field.
NOTES
- Saturday's loss snapped a nine-game winning streak for the Cougars overall and a five-game win streak against PBC competition.
- Senior right-hander Connor Folds (2-3) suffered the loss after giving up five runs (four earned) on nine hits with two strikeouts over 5.1 innings on the mound.
- Freshman left-hander Trey Farr made his collegiate debut out of the bullpen, needing just eight pitches to record a scoreless inning of work.
- Senior Warrick Wilmot paced the offense with a 2-for-4 day at the plate, while Yoxtheimer was 1-for-4 with a triple and an RBI.
- Evans and Jensen both recorded a solo home run in the game, marking their second and first home runs of the season, respectively.
