COLUMBUS, GA. – The Columbus State baseball team scored 16 runs on just nine hits in Tuesday's non-conference trouncing of Clark Atlanta University inside Burger King Stadium.
A total of 23 different Cougars made an appearance in the 16-6 run-rule victory as Columbus State now sits at 14-9 overall. Clark Atlanta moves to 6-17 with the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Columbus State opened the game with three runs on just two hits in the first inning of action
- Junior Jax Yoxtheimer stole home for the game's first run, followed by a two-run home run from senior Cayden Evans to give CSU a 3-0 lead.
- The Cougars took advantage of four Clark Atlanta fielding errors in the second inning to score eight runs and build an 11-0 advantage.
- Juniors Corey Berry and Ethan Crawley each had RBI singles in the inning, as did senior Michael Cruz.
- Yoxtheimer, senior Bryce Knox, and sophomore Victor Junco also recorded an RBI each in the eight-run second inning for Columbus State.
- Redshirt-junior Nathan Webb went two innings with four strikeouts in his first career start as a Cougar, and redshirt-senior Mathew McMahan tossed a perfect inning of relief with a strikeout as CSU held Clark Atlanta without a hit across the first three innings of play.
- In the sixth inning, the Panthers broke through for six runs on five hits, taking advantage of four walks in the inning to cut the Columbus State lead to 11-6.
- Junior Kole McGlumphy led off the seventh inning with a double to left and later scored on a wild pitch to move Columbus State ahead 12-6.
- Redshirt-freshman Jonathan Croxton had his first collegiate hit and RBI in the seventh with an RBI double to left, while freshman Logan Cohn drove in a run with an RBI in his first collegiate game to make the score 14-6.
- Another redshirt-freshman, Riley Poppe recorded his first career RBI with a sacrifice fly to foul territory in right field before an RBI single from Junco put CSU ahead 16-6 and ended the game.
NOTES
- Evans was 1-for-1 with a walk, two runs, two RBI, and his team-leading third home run of the season.
- Senior Jackson Chizek was also perfect at the plate, finishing 2-for-2 with a walk, two runs scored, and two stolen bases. Yoxtheimer had two stolen bases of his own to bring his season total to 26 stolen bases on 29 attempts.
- Junco had two RBI in the win, while Crawley and senior Landen Jensen scored two runs each.
- On the mound, redshirt junior Bryce Sanders and junior Wyatt Tharper each pitched a scoreless inning out of the bullpen, while freshman Logan Shrewsbury held CAU without a hit in 1.1 innings of relief.
