MILLEDGEVILLE, GA. – In Sunday's Peach Belt Conference series finale, the Columbus State University baseball team suffered a 6-3 loss at the hands of host Georgia College & State University at John Kurtz Field
Columbus State now sits at 13-9 overall with an 8-4 record in the PBC, while the Bobcats improve to 10-15 with a 7-8 mark in League play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Columbus State senior Cayden Evans and junior Cole Eison got the scoring started for the visitors in the third inning of play as they each recorded an RBI in the inning to give CSU a 2-0 lead.
- Georgia College answered with a run of its own in the third to cut the deficit in half before using a three-run fifth inning to take a 4-2 lead.
- Junior Corey Berry used a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning to bring a run home, but the Bobcats added two insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh to build a three-run advantage.
- The Cougars loaded the bases with one out in the eighth and put two runners on with two out in the ninth, but were shut down at the plate to end both scoring opportunities.
NOTES
- Evans led the offense with a 2-for-4 day at the plate, recording one RBI and a walk, while fellow senior Warrick Wilmot had two hits of his own and scored a run.
- Berry drew three walks in four plate appearances, and senior Michael Cruz and junior Jacob Smith each drew two walks apiece.
- The Cougars collected 12 walks in the contest, but left 16 runners on base. Over the three-game series, Columbus State's offense drew a total of 32 free passes.
- A total of five CSU pitchers made an appearance on the mound in game three as sophomore right-hander Bailey Thorne (2-2) suffered the loss after giving up three runs on just two hits in one inning of relief.
- Junior right-hander Danny Hershberger was near perfect in his two innings out of the bullpen, allowing just one base runner via walk, while senior Tucker Starling struck out three of the five batters he faced in 1.1 innings of work.
