Game One
COLUMBUS. — The Columbus State University softball team dropped game one of Tuesday's doubleheader, falling 6-1 to No. 20-ranked University of Montevallo at Cougar Field. The Cougars move to 18-10 overall, while Montevallo improves to 26-6 on the season.
Columbus State threatened against Montevallo starter Taylor Lloyd and broke up the shutout in the bottom of the seventh inning, as
Nova Wright scored on a fielding error by the Falcons' second baseman after
Ansley Collins reached safely to cut the deficit.
Khloe Shears (10-3) took the loss for Columbus State after allowing six runs on nine hits across six innings of work.
Gracyn Gurley tossed a scoreless seventh inning in relief.
At the plate, Wright,
Anna Waites, and
Mary-Catherine Sorrell each recorded a hit for the Cougars, with Sorrell adding a double.
Game Two
The Columbus State University softball team dropped game two of Tuesday's doubleheader, falling 7-3 to No. 20-ranked University of Montevallo at Cougar Field. With the loss, the Cougars move to 18-11 overall on the season.
After falling behind early, Columbus State continued to battle and found offensive momentum midway through the game. The Cougars broke through in the fifth inning, scoring two runs to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Nova Wright drove in the first run on a fielder's choice before
Aubree Ussery followed with an RBI fielder's choice to keep the pressure on.
The Cougars added a run in the bottom of the seventh, when Ussery delivered an RBI double to right center to score
Libby Buchanan and cap the scoring at 7-3.
Hanna Deschambault (3-3) took the loss for Columbus State, allowing five runs over five innings, while
Gracyn Gurley provided solid relief in the final two innings.
Offensively, Columbus State totaled seven hits, highlighted by a 2-for-3 performance from
Ansley Collins. Ussery led the team with two RBI's, while
Anna Waites and
Rylie Beddingfield each contributed doubles.
Columbus State will play next in a Peach Belt Conference series on the road, traveling to Augusta, Ga., to face Augusta University on Friday, March 27, with first pitch set for 5:00 p.m. at Jaguar Field.
