Fifth-Ranked CSU Records Shutout of Middle Georgia

COCHRAN, GA. – The Columbus State men's tennis team, ranked No. 5 overall in the latest ITA Division II rankings, recorded a 7-0 shutout of Peach Belt Conference foe Middle Georgia State University on Saturday afternoon at the MGA Tennis Courts.

Columbus State is now 12-2 overall with a perfect 2-0 record in conference play, while the Knights fall to 4-7 with a 1-1 Peach Belt mark.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars won all three doubles matches for a 1-0 lead, beginning with a 6-1 victory at No. 3 from the senior duo of Daniel Hammond and Benedek Szombathelyi.
  • The No. 2 tandem of senior Thomas Cardona and junior Samer Al Tori won 6-2, while seniors Elias Peter and Andrea Sandrone were 6-2 winners in the No. 1 doubles contest.
  • Columbus State swept singles play as well, with four of the six matches ending in straight sets.
  • (26) Cardona won 7-5, 6-0 at No. 1 over the 66th-ranked singles player in the nation, and (65) Sandrone was a 6-1, 6-4 winner at No. 4.
  • Al Tori turned in a dominant showing with a 6-0, 6-1 win in the fifth flight, while (69) Hammond won 6-1, 7-5 on court six.
  • Sophomore (49) Hugo Didier went the distance in the second flight, winning 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, and senior teammate Yike Liu also won in three sets via a 6-7, 6-1, 6-1 score.
