COLUMBUS, Ga. | Shania Wegesend completed a hat trick with the game winning goal in the final minutes as the Columbus State University Women's Soccer team stormed back from a two-goal deficit to defeat the University of North Georgia 4-3 Wednesday evening at the Walden Soccer Complex.
Columbus State wasted little time getting on the board as Wegesend struck just 29 seconds into the match, giving the Cougars an early 1-0 advantage.
North Georgia answered with three consecutive goals. Angelina Noorbehesht evened the match off an assist from Grace McGill before Madelyn Neff put the Nighthawks ahead 2-1 with Noorbehesht providing the assist. UNG extended its advantage to 3-1 when Chloe Diaz found the back of the net off McGill's second assist of the match.
The Cougars started to find their footing, as they began their comeback in the second half as Paulina Cervantes scored to cut the deficit to 3-2. Wegesend then took over late, bringing Columbus State all the way back to even the match at 3-3.
With just over a minute remaining, Wegesend found the bottom-left corner at 88:52 to complete the hat trick and cap the Cougars' comeback with a 4-3 advantage.
Columbus State will now advance to 6-2-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the conference while UNG falls to 6-3 overall and even at 2-2 in the PBC.
