DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. | The Columbus State University Women's Soccer team fell 2-1 to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Thursday (Sept. 3) afternoon at the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium.
Embry-Riddle jumped out to an early advantage, scoring twice during the opening 11 minutes. Lauryn Mateo opened the scoring in the fourth minute, finding the back of the net to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
The Eagles doubled their advantage in the 11th minute when Ebba Fjordskaer scored off assists from Lisa Elowsson and Berglind Thrastardottir, putting Columbus State in an early 2-0 deficit.
The Cougars responded late in the opening half.
Jada Goodman scored her first goal of the season in the 42nd minute off an assist from
Mia Robinson, cutting Embry-Riddle's lead to 2-1 heading into halftime.
Columbus State increased the pressure throughout the second half, outshooting Embry-Riddle 8-4 over the final 45 minutes. The Cougars put three second-half attempts on goal, including shots from
Kaylee Castano,
Shania Wegesend and
Skye Tumbelty, but Embry-Riddle goalkeeper Stella Roane kept CSU off the scoreboard to preserve the one-goal advantage.
The Cougars finished the contest with an 11-7 advantage in shots, a 6-3 edge in shots on goal and a 12-5 advantage in corner kicks. Roane recorded five saves for Embry-Riddle, while
Ashlyn Valentine finished with one save for Columbus State.
Columbus State moves to 1-2 on the season, while Embry-Riddle improves to 3-0-1.
