Pensacola, FL - The 19th-ranked Columbus State women's soccer team played No. 1 Armstrong to scoreless draw before falling to the Pirates 6-5 in a penalty kick shootout in the third round of the NCAA Tournament Friday afternoon at the UWF Soccer Complex.
CSU sees its season end with an 18-3-2 record while Armstrong improves to 19-1-2 and advances to take on No. 2 West Florida in the NCAA Quarterfinals on Sunday.
In a defensive struggle to begin the contest, the two sides combined to take five shots in the opening 45 minutes of play with each side having one good look on frame.
The second half things started to open up especially early on for the Lady Cougars as Kansas Bayly had a one-on-one with the Armstrong goalkeeper but Morgan Luckie made the save to keep the match scoreless in the 50th minute.
Bayly was in on the action in the 67th minute again after the Pirates were whistled for a foul. The junior served the free kick into the box for Jaci Carithers who made a run to the back post but was unable to get a clean touch on it.
Armstrong had a couple dangerous attempts in overtime as both Nadima Skeff and Morgan Mitchell were denied by Mary Mancin.
After a 110 scoreless minutes, the game went to a penalty kick shootout. The two squads exchanged scores through the first five rounds. Armstrong then made their sixth attempt before Pirate GK Morgan Luckie made a diving save on CSU's attempt to secure the victory.
It is the eighth straight season the Lady Cougars have won at least 15 games and the 13th shutout of the year. For the second consecutive season, CSU has been eliminated in a penalty kick shootout.
