Greenwood, S.C. - In a matchup of two of the best defenses in the Peach Belt Conference,
Mandy Janowitz scored a goal in the 61st minute to lift the Columbus State University women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Lander University Saturday afternoon. The match took place at the Jeff May Complex in Greenwood, S.C.
With the victory, the Lady Cougars pulled even with Lander for second place in the Peach Belt Conference standings as both teams have a 7-2-0 record and 21 points.
"Saying that this was a big victory for this team is an understatement," said 10th year head coach
Jay Entlich. "We battled through adversity after losing two straight matches and the ladies responded great on the road against a very talented Lander club."
Despite being held to four shots, CSU took advantage of a great scoring opportunity in the 61st minute. Junior
Kelsey Pelletier played a ball to Janowitz into the left side of the box. From 10 yards out, the freshman fired a shot for her fifth goal of the season.
The Lady Bearcats quickly looked to respond in the 69th minute but Nina Morales sent a shot high of the net.
In the 78th minute, Janowitz looked to give Columbus State (11-5-0) a 2-0 advantage but her attempt was denied by Katie Lyle.
Lander's (11-3-0) final attempt to send the match into overtime was with just nine minutes left on the clock. A ball was played into the box for Taylor Piorkowski who headed the ball wide of the net.
In the first half, both teams were trying to get a feel of the match. CSU recorded the first shot of the match in the 17th minute as a
Taylor Marks shot attempt was saved by Lyle.
Lander had three shots in the half with two needing to be saved by freshman goalkeeper
Maylyn Parsons. Piorkowski headed the ball at the net in the 30th minute, while Kimberly Kesler fired a shot late in the half.
Overall in the match, Lander held a slight 6-4 advantage in shots, while both teams took two corner kicks.
It was the least amount of shots the Lady Cougars took in a match since the opening match of the 2009 season against Grand Valley State University when the Lakers held CSU to four.
Maylyn Parsons made three saves in the match improving to 2-2 while notching her second shutout of the year. Katie Lyle fell to 11-3 allowing just the ninth goal against her this season.
Columbus State will look to build off the momentum on Wednesday, October 30 hosting Montevallo. The match will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the Walden Soccer Complex.
