Milledgeville - For the second straight match, the 17th-ranked Columbus State University women's soccer team needed a late spark to down its opponent as the Lady Cougars scored two goals in the final 14 minutes to defeat Georgia College 3-1 Thursday evening. The Peach Belt Conference match took place at Bobcat Field in Milledgeville.
"This was such a typical Peach Belt Conference match," said head coach Jay Entlich. "Georgia College played well and didn't make anything easy for us."
The Lady Cougar attack began early as CSU fired 10 shots in the first 25 minutes of play including two attempts by Chelsea Person that were saved by GC goalkeeper Annie Stephens.
Columbus State (6-3-0, 3-0-0 PBC) finally found the back of the net in the 32nd minute as freshman Mandy Janowitz received a pass from Jackie Hellett and finished the play off to give CSU a 1-0 lead. Janowitz has now scored in each of the past three matches.
However, it didn't take long for Georgia College (4-5-0, 1-3-0) to respond as the Bobcats tied the match in the 38th minute. Jordan Harman launched a deep ball which found the back right corner of the net for her first goal of the season.
Both teams were tentative starting the second half as Nicole Corcione was the only player to take a shot in the first 15 minutes of the second frame.
Looking for the match-winner, freshman Taylor Marks stepped up for the Lady Cougars netting a goal in the 76th minute pushing CSU ahead 2-1.
Georgia College had one final attack to attempt to knot the match at two as Abby Dalton fired a shot on goal in the 78th minute but Mesoha Hatcher was there for the save. A minute later, Lindsey Knott was wide on a shot attempt.
The Lady Cougars iced the match in the 83rd minute when Corcine scored her third goal of the season after receiving a pass from fellow freshman Jessica Sauer.
In the match, Columbus State held a 22-8 shot advantage while taking 10 corner kicks to GC's four.
Sophomore goalkeeper Meosha Hatcher improved to 6-1-0 making four saves. In her first start of the year, Annie Stephens took the loss making six saves on nine attempts.
Columbus State will return home on Saturday, October 5 to host Young Harris College at 3:00 p.m. at the Walden Soccer Complex. The match is the fifth annual "Kicks for the Cure" match as CSU and St. Francis Hospital team up to raise breast cancer awareness. Admission is free but donations to the Elena Diaz-Verson Amos Center for Breast Health are highly encouraged.
