Wingate, N.C. - After 110 minutes couldn't decide a winner, 21st-ranked Wingate University edged the Columbus State University women's soccer team 5-3 in a penalty kick shoutout to advance to the NCAA Tournament third round. The match took place at the WU Soccer Complex in Wingate, N.C. on Sunday.

The Lady Cougars end the 2013 season with a 15-6-1 record as the match officially goes down as a draw. With the victory, Wingate (12-2-4) records its first ever NCAA Tournament victory and will play in the Sweet 16 next weekend.

"The girls played great today and showed so much effort on the field," said head coach Jay Entlich. "You never want to lose this way but we didn't fold after allowing an early goal and that was great to see."

The Bulldogs were flawless in the shootout burying all five kicks into a corner of the net. CSU's only miss was just high hitting off the crossbar.

Each side had scoring opportunities in the two extra frames. Just a minute into the first overtime period, the Lady Cougars earned a corner kick. Kelsey Pelletier corralled the ball and fired a shot just from the top of the box but it went high. Two minutes later, Jade Montgomery was wide left on a shot attempt.

In the final minute of the overtime period, Pelletier scampered into the box and rifled the ball towards the net but a WU defender was able to get a leg on it to block it away.

Coming out of the break trailing 1-0, the Lady Cougars showed thier resiliency. Like she did on Friday, freshman goalkeeper Maylyn Parsons stepped up for her team making a diving save on a ball off of Brooke Howell's foot in the 48th minute.

The Lady Cougars responded with an attack of their own. Nicole Corcione delivered a great ball into the box for a charging Chelsea Person but goalkeeper Ashlyn Hardie grabbed it in the air before the captain could get there.

In the 58th minute, a through ball for Corcione got through the WU defense allowing the freshman to run it down. However, Hardie rushed to the ball at the top of the box just beating Corcione by a split second keeping the match in Wingate's favor.

One minute later, Columbus State had a goal disallowed after an attacker was offsides on a free kick by Casey Davis.

The Lady Cougars finally broke through in the 69th minute tying the match at one. Corcione did it all herself battling through two defenders to get into the box before ripping a shot from the right side of the 18 past a diving Hardie and the right post for the goal.

Wingate had its second goal of the match wiped off the board in the 71st minute. On a set piece, Montgomery headed the ball for the net but Parsons was there for the save. However, the rebound went to a WU attacker who scored but a foul was called on her for making contact with Parsons.

In the closing minutes of the match, CSU put together one final attack. After a 50-50 ball, Corcione dribbled all the way into the left side of the box before touching a shot towards the right post. The ball just nipped the post forcing the match into overtime.

From the beginning of the match, Wingate began attacking keeping the ball on the Lady Cougar side of the field. In the fifth minute, Montgomery pushed the attack down the right side of the field. Montgomery tried to find a Bulldog forward in the box but her ball was deflected by Rebecca Calder. However, the carom bounced towards the goal hitting the post almost resulting in an own goal.

Just over a minute later, Montgomery delivered a great ball into the box where Andi Larase and Chandler Murphy were battling for position. Murphy was able to get the upper hand and headed the ball past Parsons for the goal.

The Bulldogs almost snuck out to a 2-0 lead as Kaitlyn Brunworth fired a shot that got past Parsons but Davis was there to kick it away to safety.

Columbus State's lone good look in the frame came in the 32nd minute as freshman Taylor Marks flicked a shot with her foot that went wide to the left.

Parsons (6-3-1) made six saves in goal for the Lady Cougars while Hardie (10-2-2) recorded four.

Corcione finished the season with a team high 11 goals and 26 points. Her 11 goals finished as the fifth-most ever by a Lady Cougar freshman.

With the loss, Columbus State has been eliminated from the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season in penalty kick fashion.
