Columbus - For the first time this season, the second-ranked Columbus State University women's soccer team wound up on the wrong side of the scoreboard falling 3-2 in double overtime to No. 17 Clayton State. Saturday's match was played at the Walden Soccer Complex in Columbus.
"We certainly had chances and we created a lot of opportunities, said CSU head coach Jay Entlich. "Their players finished their opportunities when they got the chance."
"Clayton State battled from start to finish, and now we have some work to do."
The match had an ominous start for the Lady Cougars from the opening kickoff.
Clayton State (13-2-0, 8-1-0) took the first pass and had a clean look at the net, but Maria Marti Bartis skied the shot over the crossbar.
One minute later, a free kick from near midfield by Saidhbh Collins flew over the CSU backline and bounced into the upper right corner of the net to give the Lakers the lead 70 seconds in.
Columbus State (11-1-1, 6-1-0) used the goal as a wakeup call and started to mount its answer.
The Lady Cougars put seven shots at the goal forcing Charlotte McCormack to make three saves before they finally broke through.
In the 43rd minute, Shauna Griffin hit a driving corner kick into the box where Stephanie Kolwicz tapped it inside the near post to tie the match at one. It was the third goal of the season for the sophomore.
After the halftime break, it was Clayton State that struck first once again.
Jencilia Villaverde worked a ball down the right side and sent a cross to Marti Bartis inside the box. One-on-one with the goalkeeper, Marti Bartis buried the shot in the left side for her 12th goal of the year.
The Columbus State answer came 10 minutes later as Taylor Marks was taken down inside the box setting up a CSU penalty kick.
Marks then stepped up and beat McCormack for her second goal of the year.
Chances continued to come for the Lady Cougars, but the Lakers kept them out of the net through regulation sending the game to overtime.
In the first overtime, Kolwicz got off the only shot of the period three minutes in. However, the shot sailed high and without other chances the game moved into the final period.
Marks sent CSU's only shot in the second overtime wide right of the net.
Maylyn Parsons kept the Lady Cougars alive with a save on a dangerous shot by Denisha Paskell, but the following shot ended the match.
With less than two minutes to play, Lucy Cunningham took a pass from Caitlyn Dove and netted her 12th goal of the season giving the Lakers the victory.
Despite the loss, Columbus State outshot Clayton State 25-7.
