Pembroke, N.C. - Two first-half goals were all that was needed, as the seventh-ranked Columbus State University women's soccer team finished its regular season with a 2-0 victory at UNC Pembroke on Friday night. The match was played at Varsity Grounds in Pembroke, N.C.
Columbus State ends the regular season with a 16-0-1 record and an 11-0 mark in Peach Belt Conference play.
The Lady Cougars came out firing at the net right from the opening kick.
CSU tallied eight shots in the first 16 minutes of the match, forcing UNCP goalkeeper Janae Aiken to make three saves.
It wasn't until the 14th shot of the night that the Lady Cougars finally got on the board. In the 27th minute, Kelsey Pelletier played a cross into the box that found the head of Nicole Corcione who knocked it into the goal for her sixth of the year. It was the third goal for the sophomore in the last two matches after two goals at Montevallo on Wednesday.
Columbus State struck again less than 10 minutes later. Ashley Miller left a pass for Mandy Janowitz outside the box and the sophomore found the net from nearly 25 yards out to make it a 2-0 contest. Like Corcione, it was the sixth goal for Janowitz in 2014.
The Lady Cougars would close out the half with the two-goal lead, recording 19 shots to just one for the Braves.
In the second, the action slowed as CSU took just six shots over the final 45 minutes.
UNC Pembroke (10-4-3, 6-3-2) would get off three shots, with the best chance coming in the 70th minute. Amber Watkins found the ball on her foot staring at an empty net, but her shot missed wide right keeping the CSU shutout intact.
The Columbus State defense took care of the rest, keeping the Braves from attempting a shot over the final 20 minutes.
Maylyn Parsons played all 90 minutes in net for the Lady Cougars earning her conference-leading ninth shutout of the season. The sophomore has now played 315 consecutive minutes without allowing a goal.
Columbus State now turns its attention to the Peach Belt Conference Tournament scheduled to begin on Tuesday, November 4. The Lady Cougars will be the top seed and host the No. 8 seed. The opponent and time of Tuesday's match will be determined later in the weekend.
