Columbus - With three goals in the first five minutes, the fourth-ranked Columbus State University women's soccer team breezed past Georgia Southwestern 9-0 Wednesday night to stay unbeaten. The Peach Belt Conference match took place at the Walden Soccer Complex in Columbus.
Columbus State (9-0-1, 5-0-0) has now tied the second-best start in program history, matching the start of the 2010 squad.
"I was real proud of the team tonight," said CSU head coach Jay Entlich. "We were sharp defensively and we scored some really terrific goals."
"I'm super proud of where we are at right now, but we have a long way to go."
It didn't take long for Columbus State to find the scoring column as senior Kelsey Pelletier finished a cross from Nicole Corcione for the first goal of the night just over three minutes into the game.
Forty-five seconds later, Corcione scored a goal of her own, taking a failed clearance and beating the keeper to the far post for her second goal of the season.
Pelletier wasn't done just yet, as the Duluth, Ga. native tapped in a pass from fellow captain Chelsea Person to give her five goals on the season.
In total, the Lady Cougars scored three goals in a span of 71 seconds.
In the 13th minute, Person put herself in the goal column. The redshirt-junior drove into the right side of the box and was taken down, drawing a penalty kick. On the ensuing shot, Person found the back of the net for her team-leading sixth goal.
Seven minutes later, Kiana Nicholson got into the act scoring her fourth goal of the season to extend the lead out to 5-0.
Columbus State added two more later in the half, getting the first goals of the year from Jackie Hellett and Shea Wilby.
After the break, two more Lady Cougars put in goals to reach the final tally.
Shauna Griffin scored her second goal in a Lady Cougar uniform off a pass from Cassandra Wade in the 61st minute.
Tori Hood then finished off the scoring, recording her fourth goal of the season in the 72nd.
Columbus State took a season-high 38 shots on Wednesday night in the winning effort.
Georgia Southwestern (0-11-0, 0-5-0) attempted just two shots, one in each half.
Meosha Hatcher earned her first victory of the season in net after getting the start and playing a scoreless first half.
Both Emilee Leslie and Danielle Brendel made their collegiate debuts in the second half as the pair split the final 45 minutes in goal, helping preserve the fifth CSU shutout of the season.
Columbus State hits the road on Friday as the Lady Cougars travel to Valdosta State for the final non-conference game of the regular season. Kickoff from Valdosta, Ga. is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
