Winter Park, Fla. - The run for the fourth-ranked and top-seeded Columbus State University women's soccer team came to a close on Sunday after a 2-1 loss to No. 8 and fellow top seed Rollins. The match was played at Rollins in Winter Park, Fla.
Columbus State's season ends at 21-1-1, tying the program record for wins in a single season. The one loss is the fewest in a season for the Lady Cougars in program history. CSU also becomes the first team in the Peach Belt Conference to finish with one loss or fewer since 2003.
The 2014 squad matched the deepest run into the NCAA Tournament by any Lady Cougar team by getting to the quarterfinals.
The match started slow as the two sides felt each other out. It was the Lady Cougars who would strike first.
CSU's top-two scorers hooked up in the 19th minute to create the first goal of the match. Kelsey Pelletier dribbled down the right side and played a perfect ball into the center of the box. Corcione got on the receiving in and blasted one into the right side of the net for her ninth goal of the season.
Rollins tied the match in the 33rd minute. A Columbus State foul gave the Tars a free kick from just outside the top of the box. The initial shot was deflected and saved, but Emma Jones cleaned up the rebound to level the match.
The goal snapped a streak of 330 consecutive minutes without allowing a goal for the Lady Cougars.
In the 73rd minute, Rollins took its first lead off its sixth corner kick of the match. Paxton Sickler's corner connected with the head of Brenna McKee who headed it home.
Columbus State's only shot of the second half came in the 83rd minute as Chelsea Person's effort was saved by Mary Spring.
Maylyn Parsons made five saves on the day against 14 shots.
Rollins outshot the Lady Cougars on the afternoon by a 14-7 margin.
