COLUMBUS – Winners of two consecutive Peach Belt Conference tournaments, the fifth-ranked and top-seeded Columbus State University women's soccer team will start its chase for a third straight championship on Wednesday with a quarterfinal match against eighth-seeded Montevallo. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Walden Soccer Complex.
Last Time Out
Columbus State put four goals on the board in each half on its way to an 8-0 blowout victory over Georgia College on Saturday.
Olivia Jarrell netted her first career hat trick, while
Nicole Corcione added two goals for her third multi-goal match of the season.
Entlich on the Matchup
"Wednesday starts a new season for us. Montevallo played us tough at their place and now they are playing to keep their season going. We expect them to come here and challenge us and we will have to play well if we want to advance."
Series History
Columbus State is 9-3-0 all-time against Montevallo after a win earlier this season. The Lady Cougars have won seven consecutive matches against the Falcons. UM's last win over CSU came in the opening round of the PBC Tournament in 2009.
Last Meeting
Corcione netted a goal in the 11
th minute of the match to put Columbus State in front, but the Lady Cougars held just a 1-0 lead at half. CSU found three more goals after the break however, pulling away for the 4-0 win on October 19 at Montevallo.
About Montevallo
Montevallo (6-8-1, 5-6-1 PBC) is back in the conference tournament after missing it the previous two seasons.
The Falcons defeated Lander and USC Aiken in the final two matches of the regular season to earn their spot in the tournament.
Junior Taylor Gonzales leads the Falcons in scoring this season with eight goals on the year, including two in each of the two victories to close the regular season.
Senior Ellie Mouyal played all 90 minutes in net of the last two matches to earn wins for UM. Mouyal has two shutouts on the season including Saturday's match at USC Aiken.
CSU Notes
Columbus State (15-2-0, 11-1-0) captured its fourth consecutive Peach Belt Conference regular season title to earn the top seed once again in the conference tournament.
The Lady Cougars closed out a perfect month of October with their ninth consecutive shutout, tying the program record. CSU has not allowed a goal over the last 843 minutes of play.
While shutting out the opposition, Columbus State scored 52 goals in October and finished the regular season as the top-ranked scoring offense in the country at 4.47 goals per match. CSU's scoring margin for the season sits at 76-8.
Columbus State has won six consecutive PBC Tournament matches on its way to back-to-back championships the last two years. The Lady Cougars have six conference tournament championships in total.
