COLUMBUS - Looking to snap a losing streak, the Columbus State University women's soccer team will host Catawba on Wednesday. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at the Walden Soccer Complex with real-time statistics and live video available on CSUCougars.com.
Wednesday is Military Appreciation Day as the CSU women's soccer program will honor all the men and women of our armed forces with a special ceremony.
The Lady Cougars will be wearing special camouflage uniforms that will be auctioned off following the match. All proceeds from the auction will benefit a military charity.
Tickets
Singe match tickets will be available for $5 at the Walden Soccer Complex gate. Anyone who presents a valid military ID will be granted free admission into the match.
About the Columbus State University Lady Cougars
Columbus State will be in search for its first win since Sept. 13 after defeating Tampa 3-1. Since then, the Lady Cougars have dropped three straight matches.
The Lady Cougars are also looking to snap a streak of three straight matches in which they have been shutout.
Despite the scoreless drought, Columbus State still leads the Peach Belt Conference in total goals with 15.
About the Catawba Indians
Catawba will enter Wednesday's match with a 4-1 overall record after knocking off Mars Hill 3-0 on Sept. 21.
The Indians have been very stout on defense so far in 2019. Catawba has allowed just three goals all season while posting shutouts in their last two victories. Three different goalkeepers have seen time in the net with Shelby Thompson starting four out of the five matches.
Offensively, Maddie Capel has netted three goals while Courney Reavis and Jovana Sanchez each have two. Carson Schoeppe is tied for 24th in the nation with three assists.
Series History
It will be the first time since 2008 that Columbus State and Catawba have met. CSU leads the all-time series 2-1 after taking the 2008 meeting 2-0 in Columbus.
Team Notes
• Wednesday's match will conclude Columbus State's longest homestand of the season. It will be the fifth straight match at the Walden Soccer Complex for the Lady Cougars.
• CSU will be looking to snap a three-match losing streak at the Walden Soccer Complex.
• Junior goalkeeper Bria Riancho has made five or more saves for the Lady Cougars in each of the last four matches.
• CSU is averaging 15 shots per game so far in 2019.
Spreading the Wealth
Seven different Lady Cougars have scored so far this season while 10 different players have recorded a point. Riley Clark, Maddy Peterson, and Kimmy May all have three goals to lead the way.
Three Lady Cougars Named to Preseason All-PBC Team
Riley Clark, Madeline Goodfellow, and Kimmy May were named to the 11-player preseason All-PBC team.
Clark, a 2018 All-American, finished second in the conference in goals (16) and points (39). Goodfellow is one of the strongest defenders in the league helping the Lady Cougars to 10 shutouts. She was also a Google Cloud Academic All-American. May was a postseason hero for Columbus State scoring two goals in the NCAA Southeast Region championship last season. She finished the year with seven goals and 10 assists.
Entlich Among the Nation's Best
Since starting the program in 2004, Jay Entlich has established CSU women's soccer into a national powerhouse. With an overall record of 262-59-24 at CSU, he is the winningest coach in PBC history. His overall coaching record of 284-75-24 puts him eighth all-time at the NCAA Division II level.
He has coached four PBC Player of the Year award winners and has been named the conference's Coach of the Year in every season since 2014.
