Box Score Edmond, Okla. - No. 5 Columbus State University women's tennis team rallied from an early hole to defeat No. 15 Midwestern State University 4-1 on the final day of the ITA National Indoor Championship.
The Lady Cougars improve to 2-3 with the victory and finish the premier event in seventh place.
"It was important to end the weekend on a high note," commented head coach Evan Isaacs. "I'm proud of the ladies for bouncing back against a talented team."
Midwestern State (0-4) jumped out to a 1-0 lead after going 2-1 in doubles play. Tiffany Hollebeck and Casie Curry defeated Beatriz Lopez and Yelena Labat 6-1 at first doubles, but the CSU duo of Amanda Citre and Luise Sachs grabbed a 6-4 win in the third spot to extend play. In the swing match, Emi Visic and Anda Ghinga gave MSU the point after a 6-4 win over Valentina Abrile and Sara Ramirez Goncalves.
Columbus State dominated singles, winning four straight to walk away with the win. Citre was the first to wrap up with an impressive 6-1, 6-1 performance over Lilly Deatherage. Sachs was victorious 6-4, 6-3 versus Ghinga at second singles.
Ramirez Goncalves and Labat both won in straight sets as well at fourth and fifth singles, respectively. Ramirez Goncalves breezed over Visic 6-4 in set one before edging her opponent 7-5 to win set two. Labat had to go to a tiebreak in the first set to grab the 7-6 win. The second set was a different story as the Lady Cougar won 6-2.
Lopez and Abrile were in the third set when play was called.
The Lady Cougars will prepare for their first Peach Belt Conference matchup this season on Friday, March 5 against Augusta University. The match will take place in Augusta, Ga. at 2 p.m.
