Lady Cougar Notes

Landing in the Top-10
Columbus State was voted seventh in the first Division II United Soccer Coaches rankings of the season. It's the first top-10 ranking for CSU since the Lady Cougars climbed to second in the nation early in the 2019 season. CSU still has a date on the schedule against the University of North Georgia, who checked in at the 22nd position.

Spreading the Wealth
Freshman Vanessa Aviles joined the scoring club after converting two penalty kick attempts in CSU's 2-1 victory over Georgia College becoming the seventh different Lady Cougars to find the back of the net this season. Columbus State is the only team in the PBC to have at least six different goal-scorers this season.

The Countdown Is On
Head coach Jay Entlich is quickly approaching a milestone in his illustrious 19 seasons as a collegiate coach. The long-time Lady Cougar coach is four wins away from 300 in his career with 274 coming in the last 16-plus years at CSU.

Offensive Juggernaut
Columbus State ranks near the top in nearly every offensive category among PBC teams. The Lady Cougars are first in scoring average (2.50) and corners (37) and second in total goals (9) and shots on goal per game (8.25). CSU ranks inside the top-20 in the nation with its 2.50 goals per game average.

Unbeaten Streak Rolls On
Columbus State is unbeaten over its last 12 regular-season matches with an 11-0-1 record. CSU's last regular-season loss was on Oct. 5, 2019, versus Lander University. During the streak, the Lady Cougars have outscored their opponents 41-5.

SportsCenter Top-10
It didn't take long for freshman Olivia Roth to impress Cougar fans. Roth was featured on ESPN's Sportscenter Top-10 Plays as she blasted in a long-distance goal versus Lander on Feb. 22.

Freshman Vanessa Aviles converted two PK's to help the Lady Cougars down Georgia College last Thursday

COLUMBUS - Two penalty kick goals by freshman Vanessa Aviles were enough for the Columbus State University women's soccer team to defeat Georgia College 2-1 Thursday night. The Peach Belt Conference match took place at the Walden Soccer Complex.

The Lady Cougars (3-0-1, 3-0-1 PBC) were in control throughout the match until a late scare by the Bobcats tightened things. GC scored in the 86th minute after a failed clearance by the CSU defense and had chances later for the equalizer.

Following the Cassie Balzano goal, Georgia College fired three more times in an attempt to tie the match, but two were off target, while Bria Riancho stopped the final try in the 89th minute.

"Georgia College is an outstanding defensive team, and it's always a challenge for us against them," commented head coach Jay Entlich. "It's a great rivalry match, and they have some outstanding players on that squad. It's always great to grab the win, and we will start prepping for our next match on Sunday."

Aviles' penalty attempt in the eighth minute was the first shot of the match for either side. After Kimmy May darted inside the box, Lydia Atkinson was whistled for the foul. Aviles was called upon and finished the chance to put the Lady Cougars up.

Columbus State made the Georgia College (1-2-0, 1-2-0) defense work harder over the final 45 minutes. An Anna Grady shot had to be stopped by Kate Richardson in the 51st minute before Parker Morgan had a look at the net a few minutes later.

May was challenging the GC defense in the 62nd minute and dribbled near the goal line before being taken down by Caroline Tully for the foul. CSU went to Aviles again for the penalty chance, with the freshman delivering for her second goal of the night.

Columbus State looked to add to its tally, but Richardson kept the Bobcats alive. She made a diving save on a Brooke Ouimette attempt in the 79th minute before doing it again to deny Maddy Peterson a goal in the 85th.

Richardson had six saves for Georgia College as Columbus State held a 14-8 shot advantage. CSU also had 10 corners, compared to just one by GC.

Riancho made two saves in her third win of the year.

UNCP Notes

• UNC Pembroke has been hot, rattling off four straight victories after a season-opening loss to North Georgia. UNCP is 4-1-0 overall, including a 1-1 mark inside Lumbee River EMC Stadium.

• The Lady Braves have scored at least two goals in every match during their winning streak. On Feb. 28, UNCP recorded its largest victory of the year, a 4-0 decision over Young Harris College, as Rilee Seering and Alexis Pittman both scored two goals.

• Seering and Pittman headline the UNCP's offense, which leads the PBC in total goals with 10. The duo has combined for nine of the 10 UNCP scores this year, with Seering leading the entire conference with five goals. Pittman is tied with second with four.

• UNCP is averaging over 18 shots per match during its winning streak. The Lady Braves fired a season-high 21 against both Georgia Southwestern University and Georgia College.

• Chiara Coppin hasn't left the goal all year, playing over 469 minutes in net in her freshman season. She has blanked two opponents this season and holds a .769 save percentage.

• UNC Pembroke is one of four teams in the PBC to allow less than one goal per match. CSU and UNG are the leaders with a 0.50 goals-against average.

Series History

• Thursday's meeting will be the 26th all-time meeting between Columbus State and UNC Pembroke. CSU has battled UNCP more than any other team in program history.

• CSU holds a 19-5-1 lead in the series, but things have been tighter in Pembroke. The Lady Cougars are only 4-3 against the Lady Braves on their home pitch.

• UNCP took last season's meeting in overtime after a 96th minute goal by Seering broke a one-all tie.

• It will be the last scheduled meeting between the two rivals as members of the Peach Belt Conference. UNCP is departing for Conference Carolinas beginning next year.
