Lady Cougar Notes

Spreading the Wealth
Another Lady Cougar got in the scoring column last week as Kelly Hendricks became the eighth different player to find the back of the net this year for CSU. Columbus State is one of only two teams in the PBC to have at least eight different goal-scorers this season. Freshman Vanessa Aviles leads the team with three goals, all off of penalty kicks.

Postseason Time
Columbus State does have a chance to capture a trophy this season with the Peach Belt Conference hosting a truncated postseason tournament. The top-four teams in the standings, based on points earned percentage, will advance to the tournament to be played on campus sites. The semifinal round is set for Friday, April 9, with the championship match coming days later on Sunday, April 11.

Offensive Juggernaut
Columbus State ranks near the top in nearly every offensive category among PBC teams. The Lady Cougars are first in corners (43) and second in scoring average (2.40), total goals (12) and shots on goal per game (16.80). CSU ranks inside the top-25 in the nation in goals (12th) and scoring average (22nd).

Unbeaten Streak Rolls On
Columbus State is unbeaten over its last 13 regular-season matches with a 12-0-1 record. CSU's last regular-season loss was on Oct. 5, 2019, versus Lander University. During the streak, the Lady Cougars have outscored their opponents 44-6.

Landing in the Top-10
Columbus State was voted seventh in the first Division II United Soccer Coaches rankings of the season. It's the first top-10 ranking for CSU since the Lady Cougars climbed to second in the nation early in the 2019 season.

The Countdown Is On
Head coach Jay Entlich is quickly approaching a milestone in his illustrious 19 seasons as a collegiate coach. The long-time Lady Cougar coach is two wins away from 300 in his career with 275 coming in the last 16-plus years at CSU.

Lady Cougars to Meet UNC
Columbus State added another Division I exhibition match to its spring slate, as the Lady Cougars will travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. to play the 21-time NCAA national champions Tar Hills on Tuesday, April 6. It will be the fifth match against an NCAA Division I opponent for CSU in 2021 (the University of Alabama, University of Alabama-Birmingham, University of South Alabama and Mississippi State University).

SportsCenter Top-10
It didn't take long for freshman Olivia Roth to impress Cougar fans. Roth was featured on ESPN's Sportscenter Top-10 Plays as she blasted in a long-distance goal versus Lander on Feb. 22.

Rachael Sweigard scored her second goal of the season to help CSU to a 3-1 road victory at UNC Pembroke

PEMBROKE, N.C. - Three different players found the back of the net as the No. 7 Columbus State University women's soccer team won its first match in Pembroke, N.C. in four years with a 3-1 decision over UNC Pembroke on Thursday. The Peach Belt Conference match took place at Lumbee River EMC Stadium.

After UNC Pembroke (4-2-0, 4-2-0 PBC) knotted the match at one in the 33rd minute, Vanessa Aviles and Rachael Sweigard score goals to lift Columbus State to the victory.

"This is a difficult place to play, and I'm proud of the ladies for responding to the challenge," commented head coach Jay Entlich. "We could've packed in it after they tied it up, but give credit to our team for finding a way to a much-needed win."

Columbus State (4-0-1, 4-0-1) got on the board first in the 17th minute as Kelly Hendricks snuck one by the UNPC goalkeeper for her first goal of the year. Maddy Peterson and Anna Grady picked up assists during the leadup.

It didn't take CSU long to retake the lead following UNCP's goal in the 32nd minute. On an attack, Columbus State was fouled in the box to set up a penalty kick chance for Aviles in the 37th minute. The freshman sized the chance, beating the goalkeeper to the left.

The Lady Cougars began to barrage the Lady Braves in the second half. In the 60th minute, Ireland Bryant fired a shot on goal that was blocked before Rachael Sweigard scored on the second-chance opportunity.

Columbus State outshot UNC Pembroke 17-7, including a 10-2 margin in the second half.

About North Georgia

• North Georgia enters Thursday with a 4-1-0 record following its 1-0 win over Lander University on Monday. It was UNG's second straight 1-0 decision as the Nighthawks defeated Young Harris College by the same margin on March 8.

• UNG's lone loss this year was at Georgia College on Feb. 21, as the Bobcats shocked the Nighthawks with a 96th-minute golden goal to give GC a 1-0 win.

• Goals have been hard to find for North Georgia this season. UNG has scored one or fewer goals in four of its five matches, with the lone exception being a 6-1 offensive explosion at Francis Marion University on Feb. 4.

• Katey Derkay has four of the nine North Georgia goals this season, while Maysoon El-Shami leads the PBC with four assists. Abbie Crane has a pair of goals and assists to her tally this season.

• Morgan Ramby recorded her second shutout on Monday at Lander. The goalkeeper has a .818 save percentage and has allowed two goals in over 360 minutes of action.

• UNG paces the PBC in goals-against average holding a 0.395 mark. The Nighthawks have allowed just two goals this season.

Series History

• Columbus State and North Georgia will be meeting for the 24th time on Thursday in one of the PBC's best rivalries. CSU leads the all-time series 18-4-1.

• UNG is one of the rare programs to have found some success in Columbus. However, Lady Cougars still hold a 6-4 margin against the Nighthawks. UNG has won two straight at the Walden Soccer Complex.

• UNG has won two of the previous three meetings against CSU, including taking a 1-0 decision in 2019. A 54th-minute goal was enough for North Georgia to knock off then ranked No. 13 Columbus State.

• The two times have met in the postseason seven times, including in the 2016 NCAA Southeast Regional Championship in Miami Shores, Fla.
