Lady Cougar Notes

Quick Turnaround
Playing on short rest is nothing new for the Lady Cougars, but it's the first time Columbus State will play two regular-season matches in a four-day span. It will be the third time this spring CSU has played a match with two full days of rest (including exhibition matches).

Regular-Season Finale
Sunday is the last scheduled match for Columbus State in the regular season. CSU has had three postponements (USC Aiken, Clayton State University and Georgia Southwestern University) during the year. At this time, those matches have not been rescheduled.

Postseason Time
Columbus State does have a chance to capture a trophy this season with the Peach Belt Conference hosting a truncated postseason tournament. The top-four teams in the standings, based on points earned percentage, will advance to the tournament to be played on campus sites. The semifinal round is set for Friday, April 9, with the championship match coming days later on Sunday, April 11.

A Win And You're In
The Cougars will secure a place in the upcoming PBC Tournament with a win on Sunday. CSU is currently in third with a .722 points earned percentage, just behind UNG (.833) and Flagler College (.778). UNC Pembroke (.714) holds the fourth spot.

Spreading the Wealth
Another Lady Cougar got in the scoring column last week as Kelly Hendricks became the eighth different player to find the back of the net this year for CSU. Columbus State is one of only two teams in the PBC to have at least eight different goal-scorers this season. Freshman Vanessa Aviles leads the team with three goals, all off of penalty kicks.

Offensive Juggernaut
Columbus State ranks near the top in nearly every offensive category among PBC teams. The Lady Cougars are first in corners (52) and second in scoring average (2.00), total goals (12) and shots on goal per game (7.50). CSU ranks 15th in the nation in goals.

Landing in the Top-10
Columbus State was voted seventh in the first Division II United Soccer Coaches rankings of the season. It's the first top-10 ranking for CSU since the Lady Cougars climbed to second in the nation early in the 2019 season.

Lady Cougars to Meet UNC
Columbus State added another Division I exhibition match to its spring slate, as the Lady Cougars will travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. to play the 21-time NCAA national champions Tar Hills on Tuesday, April 6. It will be the fifth match against an NCAA Division I opponent for CSU in 2021 (the University of Alabama, University of Alabama-Birmingham, University of South Alabama and Mississippi State University).

The Countdown Is On
Head coach Jay Entlich is quickly approaching a milestone in his illustrious 19 seasons as a collegiate coach. The long-time Lady Cougar coach is two wins away from 300 in his career with 275 coming in the last 16-plus years at CSU.

SportsCenter Top-10
It didn't take long for freshman Olivia Roth to impress Cougar fans. Roth was featured on ESPN's Sportscenter Top-10 Plays as she blasted in a long-distance goal versus Lander on Feb. 22.

Last Time Out
BriaNG
Bria Riancho made a key save in CSU's last match against North Georgia.

COLUMBUS - A 69th-minute goal was enough for No. 22 the University of North Georgia to upset the No. 7 Columbus State University women's soccer team 1-0 on Thursday evening. The Peach Belt Conference match took place at the Walden Soccer Complex.

The two teams played a scoreless opening half, with Columbus State (4-1-1, 4-1-1 PBC) dominating possession, and the Lady Cougars started the second half on the attack. CSU had four corner kicks over the first eight minutes of the second half, with the final one resulting in a header from Parker Morgan that had to be stopped by UNG goalkeeper Morgan Ramby.

It was North Georgia (4-1-0, 4-1-0 PBC) who finally broke through a few minutes. The Nighthawks raced down the far side of the field before the ball was sent into the box. Taylor Malasek put a soft touch on the ball and played it to Megan Dumon, who rifled the shot by Bria Riancho

Rachael Sweigard attempted to tie the game in the 72nd and 80th minute but both shots were denied by Ramby.

Riancho kept the Lady Cougars alive in the 81st minute following a CSU foul in the box. The senior came away with the clutch penalty kick save off, diving to her right to reject Malasek's try.

The Lady Cougars pressed on over the final minutes but were unable to come up with the equalizer.

"North Georgia is an excellent defensive team, and you know what you are going to have to play against when you match up against them," commented head coach Jay Entlich. "We just didn't make enough plays tonight, and they did. You have to give them credit for executing when they needed to."

Columbus State fired off the first two shots of the match but its best look of the day came on its fifth and final shot of the first half. In the 40th minute, Lizz Forshaw had open space near the top of the box before setting up for a dangerous look at the net. However, the shot went high to keep the match scoreless.

The Lady Cougars outshot UNG 10-5 and held a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.
