COLUMBUS - The No. 1 Columbus State University men's tennis team will look to three-peat as ITA National Indoor champions as the Cougars travel to Indianapolis to defend their title this weekend at the UINDY Tennis Center.
The Cougars will begin play in the tournament on Friday with a quarterfinal match against a familiar foe, No. 11 the University of North Georgia. CSU enters the tournament as the second seed, while UNG is the seventh seed.Â
Columbus State is off to a quick start in 2022, winning its first four matches. CSU has two top-25 wins to its tally and defeated Division I Alabama State University.
Alvaro Regalado, who enters the tournament as the top-ranked singles player at the DII level,
Javier Cueto Ramos,
Tommaso Schold and
Pietro Martinetti all have 4-0 singles records heading into the weekend. Cueto Ramos is eighth in the ITA singles rankings, while Martinetti is 36th.
The Cougars haven't lost a doubles match in 2022, going 12-0 so far this year. Head coach
Evan Isaacs has played six different tandems this year, including Cueto Ramos and
Felix Steen, who have a 3-0 mark at the third doubles spot.
Columbus State is 6-0 all-time in ITA National Indoor play, never dropping a point in the competition. The Cougars defeated Barry University in the 2020 championship and the University of Indianapolis in 2021.Â
No. 5 Barry enters the tournament as the first overall seed. The full quarterfinal matchups are listed below.
It's the first time the ITA National Indoor Championship is being held in Indianapolis. The first two editions of the event were in Oklahoma City.Â
