COLUMBUS - Isaac Bouton hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th to complete a 5-4 come from behind victory for the eighth-ranked Columbus State University baseball team over the University of Montevallo on Wednesday night. The non-conference game took place at Burger King Stadium in Columbus.
CSU (20-4) played from behind all night until scoring four in the seventh to tie the game at four. The Cougars used their favorite weapon in the inning, knocking two homers in the crucial inning. Derek Wylie led the frame off with a monster shot over the centerfield wall. Following a Matthew McDade single and a sacrifice bunt by Connor Kirley, Bouton stepped to the plate and jacked a game-tying home run to left.
The bullpens took the centerstage from there as both staffs impressed. Logan Seehafter threw two hitless innings for CSU before giving way to Peyton Burton in the ninth. The sophomore threw a perfect ninth and tossed another scoreless inning in the 10th.
The bottom of the 10th started according to plan for the Cougars as Win Johns drew a four-pitch walk before Wylie worked a work to put two on. Looking to sacrifice the runners up, McDade laid down a bunt, however, a fielding error by the pitcher Connor Phelan loaded the bases.
After a pitching change and a strikeout, Bouton delivered the game-winning hit on a 0-2 count.
"Great win for the guys tonight," commented head coach Greg Appleton. "We had to fight for this one against a talented team."
Bouton finished the night a triple away from the cycle, going 4-for-6 with three RBIs. Wylie was 2-for-4 with his solo homer.
Burton (2-0) was awarded the win for the Cougars after his scoreless appearance. Jamie Boatright started for CSU and allowed three runs over three innings.
Reed Latimer started the scoring on Wednesday with a solo homer in the second to put Montevallo (16-6) on top. The Falcons scored two more in the third on a sacrifice fly and Latimer's second run-scoring hit of the game.
UM made it 4-0 in the sixth on a pinch-hit homer from Jackson Norris.
