WINGATE, N.C. - In a top-25 showdown, the 13th-ranked Columbus State University women's tennis team knocked off 22nd-ranked Wingate University 4-3 Friday afternoon at the WU Tennis Complex in Wingate, N.C.
CSU (7-4) had to play in rally mode after dropping the doubles point to the Bulldogs. WU won third doubles 6-2 after upsetting 34th-ranked
Yelena Labat and
Sara Ramirez. First and second doubles were tight, with the teams splitting the decisions. Wingate won first doubles 7-5, while the pair of
Neila Trklja and
Agostina Bigotti edged Elena Gunfaus and Saga Berggren 7-6.Â
The Lady Cougars didn't have much room for error in singles play. In a ranked match at first singles, 22nd-ranked Trklja was victorious 6-1, 6-0 over 26th-ranked Camilla Ciaccia.
Mariana Ramirez also grabbed a ranked win at third singles, taking down 33rd-ranked Gunfaus 6-0, 6-1.
Luciana Galves was a 6-1, 6-2 straight-set winner over Flaminia Guidantoni at fifth singles.
After WU won fourth and sixth singles, second singles between Abrile and Chloe Kosmrlj became the decisive match. The two players split the opening sets before Abrile took the 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 decision.
