AUGUSTA, Ga. - The eighth-ranked Columbus State University baseball team capped off a 3-game Peach Belt Conference sweep on Sunday with two dominant wins over Augusta University at Jaguar Field.
The Cougars (22-4, 8-1 PBC) grabbed a 14-0 win to begin the day before a 10-3 victory in the second game of the doubleheader.
"Glad the guys came out here and took care of business," commented head coach
Greg Appleton. "Noah [Windhorst] was set the tone in game one and the offense gave the staff plenty to work with."
Game 1 | CSU 14, AU 0
It was tight early as Columbus State held just a 1-0 lead through four. However, three straight singles knocked out AU's starter and gave the Cougars a 2-0 advantage.
Steven Minter had the RBI hit in the stretch, while
David Meadows added on another later in the frame for CSU.
CSU broke the game open in the seventh with a 4-run inning.
Derek Wylie had an RBI single before
Mason Davis knocked home two to make it 7-0.
After a Wylie two-run homer in the eighth, CSU added on five more in the ninth to secure the victory.Â
Noah Windhorst was terrific on the hill to improve to 4-2 on the season. He tossed a career-high eight scoreless innings, striking out eight. He scattered two hits and two walks before giving way to
Peyton Burton, who capped off the shutout.Â
Wylie was 3-for-6 with three RBIs and two runs. Meadows (3-for-6) also found three hits and stole a base.
Game 2 | CSU 10, AU 3
The Cougars jumped on the Jaguars early in game two, scoring four in the first and five in the second.Â
Davis had another 2-run single in the first, while a 3-run homer from
Will Wilbanks highlighted the 5-run second.Â
Minter made it 10-1 after 2.5 after picking up his second RBI of the day.
That would be plenty for Cougar starter
Colton Joyner. The righty picked up his fifth victory of the year on Sunday.
